Door baffles

I thought I'd make this a different topic, but having read mSaLL150's door tutorial, I can see that installing the MDF baffles for the mids is what I need to do when I deaden the doors. The speakers mounted on those stock pedestals leave a lot to be desired and can't provide a very rigid mounting platform.

Does the thickness of the MDF really matter? If not, what would be considered the minimal thickness that should be used? I'm running a 6.75" Boston Pro60SEs with only 55 RMS watts per channel. It's more than enough for me, so if that figures into the thickness equation, there it is. I was thinking of using something a little thinner than 5/8", maybe 1/2" or 3/8" so as not to cut the door panel pocket as much.

I appreciate any insight you guys can provide.

I had to use 3/4" because my mid wouldn't fit without it. My ID mids are 3.15" deep and have a very wide magnet, and there is a metal bar right behind the speaker mounting hole (in a supercab at least). If your mid is less than 3" deep, you could probably get by with .5" baffles. I wouldn't go any thinner than that though. If you use wood make sure to waterproof it.

That makes sense, now that you mention the mounting depth. My mounting depth is something like 2.4". I'm sure the mounting pedestals put it about 3/8" outboard of the door. What I was looking for was the minimum thickness I should be using. It's not like I have this stuff laying around, otherwise I'd use what I had. I intend to seal it and put a polyeurthane coating on it. Appreciate the input.

Most big hardware stores like H---Depot or Lo--s have a section for left over building materials. I just picked up a piece of 3/4 mdf that was 37" X 27" for 59 cents. Heck of a buy. The full sheet would have cost me $27.
