Effective use of sound deadening
Effective use of sound deadening
I'm seeing some mighty impressive application of sound deadening products, and I'm considering doing it to my truck. It would seem the most effective place for sound deadening would be the door panels. This is where I'll probably start unless there is another area that is more critical. What does everyone use to cover the large access holes in the door. I know I don't want anything permanent, but something that can be removed. Is it necessary to cover every square inch of the outer door panel?
I am currently going to be using plexiglass and sheet metal screws to seal that area up so I can take it off when I need to. I would also recommend the back wall on the cab it will make a huge impact there as well. Then if you want to go all out go with the floor and the roof.
How thick is the plexiglas? Are you going to apply deadener to it too? I'm thinking I might try and find some thin aluminum sheet for the access hole. I figured doors would make the biggest difference for deadener. I'm still using that OEM covering on the rear wall, so I figured with covering in place, it wouldn't make that much difference. The doors are definitely vibrating. How did you prep your doors for the deadener. Approximately how many sq ft of deadener covered your 4 doors? I've been following your install. Looks good! I wish I had the time to pull something like that off.
I am using 1/4" thick plexi that I am going to bolt and seal to the door. I will probably only run dampener along the edges of it to only cover the bolts. I am wanting to be able to see into the door panel to check for problems before I have to tear into something.
Covering the back wall will still make a big difference, that is where a majority of your road noise comes from. I drove with the back wall uncovered for a while and it is ridiculous how much noise is really let in back there.
I used probably 20 sq ft per door but I doubled up the dampener to make sure I had the doors good and quite. I used the 62 sq ft roll that Rick at Raamauido sells. I put the rest of it on the back wall and the transmission hump in the center of the truck. I will be purchasing two more rolls here in the near future to complete the job. I have the two rear doors left, the roof, and most of the floor needs covering.
Thank you for the kind words, it is a decent system with a great install. I still have a lot to learn but I know that it will be a good preforming system for my sq needs.

I had the top part of my rear seat out and I know what you're talking about. But most of that road noise is coming through the rear vents. I am not impressed with that design. Did you cover yours up?
Not really but I build a little cover for them with a .25" spacer to that way air could still flow out. But I dampened it, and it really helps to deflect the sound waves coming in. Now I have the best of both worlds I felt it was a fair compromise.
I appreciate the info. If I could bug you with one more question? How much deadener did you need for the rear wall?

Thanks in advance
Sorry I have not been able to get pics of the vent covers yet. But the plexi is an odd shape I can measure when I get home but roughly I would say it will take a 30 x 24 min for each door so you can cut it to the correct shape.
