Cool V1 Radar Detector Hard-Wired

Just have to say thanks to all the help I have received from this message board.

Yesterday, in about 10 minutes, I hard-wire installed my V1 radar detector in front of the courtesy lights/compass. You can't get much cleaner than having your power cord length at just 3-4 inches and the detector turning on with the ignition.

If anyone needs help with this, let me know.

The speakers are the next thing to go.

On the way...better speakers, bigger tires.

Question

Could you go into a little bit a detail on how you did the hook-up. It soulds like you took power off your compass. If so where would you suggest the normal F-150 owners get their power to hard wire the detector. As I am looking into doing this myself. I really don't want to go all the way back to the fuse box but that would be okay if I had to.

In the old days, when you wanted to hard-wire anything, you were best to go to the fuse box. Now, however, you can get power from any 12V source for your pos connection and connect your ground wire just about anywhere there's metal.

I found the white wire in the wiring harness where my compass and courtesy lights are between the sun visors. Also there are a few black screws for the ground wires. I used an inline fuse as to not blow the unit with any spikes or mis-wiring.

If you can find a positive wire for any electrical component that will respond to the ignition being turned on, you're in business. Just use a wire tap on the 12V positive line and attach the neg wire to the frame/metal. If not, it's fairly easy to conceal the wire coming from the fuse box behind the trim pieces on the sides of the windshield.

Hope this helps.
