Cool Help?

I have a '97 F-150 Stepside 4x4 which I love. One thing I'm having a problem w/ is finding a CD player I want. There is a new 6-disc in dash player now being sold by Crutchfield. I believe it's made by Visteon which is owned by Ford. It's listed as fitting on '98 or '99 and up F-bodies, Expeditions, etc. I really love this unit because it looks factory (I guess it is). However, I called Crutchfield and the salesman told me that it would'nt work in my '97. He really offered no explanation except it just listed it as not working. Can anyone explain to me why? And what if possible can I do to make it work? I really love this unit and want it to work. Any help or advice would be a great. Thanks in advance.

SweetEffie:
You can do a search on this subj in this forum and get quite a bit of info. Try these threads for a start ....

"The radio you are referring to is known as CD6 and is designed and built by Visteon (where I work)... There is one problem, the radio is too big to fit in the dash of a F150 without making some modifications inside the dash. It can be done, but you have to cut some brackets out of the way.

The CD6 radio has the same wiring as any 99 radio or a 97/98 non-premium radio. If you order a CD6 radio, make sure you get the premium version and not the audiophile version. The audiophile version is wired for a Ford subwoofer, which is not on the F150.
"

and ....

" Also, the 99 radios are bigger than the 97 radios (take up more space inside the dash) so I think you'd have to modify the mounting hardware too."

and ....

"The Visteon CD6 (I work for Visteon in case some of you don't know me, I'm an audio engineer) does not have RCA jacks. If you have a 99/2000 F-series, Expedition, or Navigator the radio will fit with some minor cutting inside the radio opening. The CD6 will work a factory CD changer (Pressing the CD button on the radio switches between the in dash player and the external cd changer) and the rear seat controller in the SUVs."

Additionally, check http://www.radiosandmore.com/

Their web site doesn't list the '97 as being able to accept the in dash 6 disc player.

IF you have the non-premium stereo and are willing to do some plastic cutting/ metal bending, it sounds as though the CD-6 might fit. You can always return it if it doesn't. Have you considered a remote CD changer - - $300 versus the $600 for the CD-6 ??

Question

Thank you for the very helpful info. The stereo I now have in it is the standard AM/FM cassette. But the guy who had it before me evidently had a hi-zoot system in it because it has some exposed wires running behind the center console or something. I don't believe it had the premium sound system in it originally. I guess the biggest reasons I wanted the CD-6 is because of the looks and fit plus I would'nt need to hog up the space in my console w/ a CD changer. If I was to go ahead w/ the CD-6, do you think it would be worth the trouble and expense? Would I be able to power some 10 in speakers in the rear w/ it? Any help would be great.

Cool

" ...would (it) be worth the trouble and expense?"
NO: You might want to get a (single) in-dash Cd head unit rather than the CD-6. There are usually a couple of these for sale in the F-150 classifieds.

"Would I be able to power some 10 in speakers in the rear w/ it?"

NO: In either case, You will NOT be able to power 10 inch speakers with the head unit. You will need an amp.

And ...if you're going to get an amp (for the 10 in subs) and want a cd changer ... you might want to consider buying an aftermarket, in dash CD player. Later, you can easily add an amp, subwoofers, and Cd-changer. Check Crutchfields @

You might also want to look at previous threads in this forum - - there is a ton of info on the subj archived here.

actually if you really only want one pair of speakers and 1 (8 or 10in) sub, you can go with a high model pioneer reciever. It has an option on the headunit to run 1 pair of speakers, and on one of the 2 rear outputs can be connected to a sub, the headunit will then 'bridge' the rear channel to the sub and puts out around 80 watts max. If you do that to a sub in a ported or bandpass bock it will add some bass.

premier 720, pioneer 6cd changer, 12 premier sub, premier componets, 2 soso amps

still to come: new spark plug wires, new rims and tires, maybe a supercharger eventually.
