Question Cd Changer Installation

I want to install an aftermarket RF CD Changer in my 99 F150 Extended Cab. Where is the best place to get power for it from? Is there a place on the web to get a 99 wiring diagram? Also last question, I think I'm going to purchase a Sony changer, does anyone have one? Do you like it? Thanks for the help.

Thumbs up

bamafan...

Do you have captain's chairs or the 60/40 bench seat? I have the captains chairs and mounted my changer to the bottom of the center console. This makes it really easy to change discs and it's out of view of anyone walking by. If you have a bench seat in the front, maybe you could mount it under the rear seat? You wouldn't be able to fold down one of the rear seats though.

I have a Sony changer, but it's a minidisc changer, not a CD changer and it's not an RF changer, but I haven't had any complaints about it yet.

If you have a 99 with 60/40 split bench, the best place (IMO) is under the rear seat. The rear seat design on 97-99 allows flip-down even with stuff under the seat.

FordLover is correct, the best place for the intallation of a cd changer (if you have 60/40 seat) is under the rear seat, but if you do you will not be able to fold it down. That's where I have my changer installed.

Cool

I mount them under the passenger side front seat. You have to partially unclip the lug wrench, but so far that has not posed any problems. Or, you could go with the cd-6 from Ford Visteon, and not have to worry about where to mount anything or an rf changer to mount, since all 6 disks are contained in the head unit, with nothing else to install. You just have to trim the bracket that runs atop the radio.

Question

I have a Kenwood cd changer mounted under the driver's side rear seat of my supercab. I've been having quite a bit of annoying skipping. It was installed by screwing it into the floor of the cab. How can I re-install this in the same place, but reducing vibration and ride jolts the changer doesn't like? Should I place MDF underneath, and then place the screws through it? Any suggestions appreciated.

I have a Sony RF under the driver's side rear seat on my '99 SC. No skipping problems at all. I had it installed for me, so I don't know where they picked up the power. It's a good unit, but IMO the direct wire CD changers do have slightly better highs than the RF units. If you eventually intend to replace the factory head unit, you might consider getting a direct wired.

Dirt Bike Dave, I do have a Kenwood 6011 HU, with the cable running directly to the changer under my rear seat. I updated my signature last nite, but wasn't able to edit it into my post, so now you can see what I have. I thought about that after the post was made. Anyway, the cable isn't the problem, it's how to get the changer more isolated from vibration and road jolts.

My wife had a Kenwood in the trunk of her old T-Bird, and it would skip on sharp bumps and potholes. Now we both have Sonys and they've never skipped. The damping system on the Sony might be better.

You could try getting some elastic rubber bumpers or cushions to mount between the changer and the floor. I don't think the MDF would help. Maybe a sheet of foam like a mouse pad or a typewriter pad would help. Or weatherstripping. just a little bit more shock absorption might solve the problem.
