'97 cd player?
I don't recall ever seeing a 97 with a factory cd player. Even my aunts Lariat doesn't have one. You could always get an aftermarket head unit that will play cd's. I suggest getting an aftermarket head unit with a cd changer. The head unit should play cassettes (why not) and have controls on it to control a cd changer. You then can play the radio, cassettes, and an assortment of cd's.

I was basically in the same situation that you're in. My '98 came with the factory AM/FM/Cassette.
After looking for a used unit, I ended up baying a dual media unit out of a 2000 Explorer. The only drawback was it had a green display instead of a blue one. It was plug compatable, had the built in amp, and sounds great. It's a true double DIN unit, requiring a "slight" modification of the dashboard and mounting bracket.

My 97 XLT also came with a factory Am/Fm CD head unit. When I upgraded the stereo I used the wiring kit for the aftermarket radio to learn the functions of the pins on the factory radio then soldered wires onto the exposed pins. It is to this day doing duty in my friends travel trailer.

The singel CD/radio was standard in the Lariat and optional in the XLT in 1997 with an optional 6 disc changer with cassette/radio in the Lariat. They would put the changer in the center console of the Captains Chair equiped Lariats and in the drivers side rear in a hole under the back seat arm rest in the lariat Supercabs.
Sycoholic, maybe your Mom had the changer and you or she didn't know it?
