There is an amp running the speakers. Otherwise I think the speakers and HU are the same.

On the 99's the speakers are identical.
In 99 they also built the high power amp into the HU, the 97s and some 98s had an external amp for the "premium" sound.
Many ppl here feel as if the only thing "premium" is the premium you pay for it.
I think it's rated 20Wx4 for premium sound but I'm not sure.

Thumbs up

wolvrin704, thanks for your response. Does anyone know how many watts it is? Can't find jack about it on Ford's site. Also looked at http://www.radiosandmore.com and couldn't find any specs there either. . .

The standard systems have a 4x6 watt amp (in the head) driving regular speakers.

The premium systems have a 4x20 watt amp (in the head) driving regular speakers in the back and premium (2 way) speakers in the front.

An Audiophile system has a 4x20 watt amp (in the head) driving the same speaker config as premium, with a powered subwoofer (has its own amp) and the system is Equalized to tune the sound to the interior of the vehicle space. This system is not offered on the F series, but it is on the SUVs and Lincolns.

dlb: Did you really mean to ask - does the "premium" sound system really sound premium? Heck NO! But, I knew that before I ordered the Y2K Lariat. In fact, changed the order right before they started construction. Added the center console for a jlaudio subwoofer. Many agree with me - see the chatter under "subwoofer".
