Wink changer console mounting

I have a Kenwood kdcc662 changer arriving within a week, along with a Kenwood 6011 HU. My question is, how do you guys mount the changer? What is under the console floor that could be damaged if I directly screw the changer into the console floor? Any other tips / hints would be appreciated. Shhh, I told my wife I could do this myself without messing up the truck or throwing tantrums, so lets work together, OK

I don't imagine very many people have done what I did to mount my changer, but I'll tell you what I did anyway, since I think it turned out pretty nice. I decided to mount my DSP unit in the front half of the console and my minidisc changer in the rear half. First of all, I removed the center console from the truck to make it easier to work on (this is quite easy...if you want to do this but don't know how to do it, let me know). Then I removed the liner on the bottom of the center console and traced its outline on a piece of 5/8" MDF (medium density fiberboard) and cut it out. I then cut this piece in half (crossways). I then cut out a few small squares to use as feet and screwed them to the bottom of the two small platforms. Next, I drilled some large holes in the rear platform so I could run cables through them. Then I glued some black subwoofer box carpet to the top of each platform. I then stapled some really strong adhesive-backed hook-and-loop fasteners to the feet of each platorm and mounted each platform in the center console. I then screwed the changer into the rear platform. It looks really nice and it's quite stable. I have some pictures of my install, but I haven't scanned them yet...if you'd like to see them or have any questions about it, let me know.

Cool

I removed the rear seat and mounted it under the passenger side. Out of the way, I dont lose console space, and easily accessed. It doesn't interfere with the flip forward of the seat either. You have to remove the seat though to do it right, unless you have a right angle drill you can put a phillips bit in.

Question

MattT and Sycoholic
Thanks for the reply. I had thought about doing something like MattT and mounting the changer to some mdf. Just a couple of questions; How do you remove the console? I pretty much understood your platform idea, except the hook and loop fasteners. Are those to secure the platform to the floor of the console? I had thought about getting some large strips of velcro the place on the floor of the console, with strips also on the bottom of the mdf platform to hold it in place. Is that too cheesy of a plan? I assume I can get mdf at a stereo store or a lumber yard, right? Thanks for your input.

The center console is quite easy to remove. First of all, remove that thin piece of plastic that lies on the bottom of the center console. You should now see a couple of bolts sticking up. Remove the nuts from these two bolts. Now you need to remove the piece of plastic from the top front of the center console that has the cup holders, etc...this piece should just pup out. Once you remove that piece, look down through where the cupholders used to be and you should see two more bolts. Again, remove the nuts from these two bolts. You should now be able to pull straight up on the center console and remove it from your truck.

Yeah, I put hook and loop fasteners on the feet of the little platforms I built and the console to secure the platform to the console. I know it sounds kind of cheesy, but it works. If I were you, I'd try to find some very strong velcro though, just to be safe...I found some that is made by 3M that has hooks on both sides (instead of one side hooks and and side loops) and it is very strong...I have to really pull to get it apart. I found it at Target.

I got a 2 foot by 4 foot peice of mdf at a local lumber yard for under $2...that would probably be best way to go.

Any other questions, let me know.

Matt
