eq question

anyone still runnin an eq these days? i just got a pretty good deal on a clarion eqs746 when i was shoppin for eqs i saw this one and thought it looked like it had everything i wanted but after i got it in my hands i thought it looked kinda rinky dinky. it has 6 outputs being sub R&L, front R&L, and rear R&L, but only has four inputs being main R&L and aux R&L. the reason i wanted an eq is because i wanted to fine tune my sound from my head unit better. all it has is treble, bass, fader, and balance adjustments. other than that i love the head unit. so anyway my question is am i actually gainin anything with this eq since i am gonna have to y together front and rear right channel into main right in and y together front and rear left channel into main left in then it will split it all back up and also seperate a sub out of it?

sorry for the sagga but i just wanted to try and give as much of the problem as i could. i appreciate any help with this that i receive. so thanks in advance, mike

Na man, your really not gaining anything since your headunit already has a built in eq it allows you to "fine" tune it. So really, you dont need them.

my head unit has no such thing, neither did my last one, neither does my friend's
there are a couple presets, but those still only adjust bass and treble

i would say that that eq is not going to help too much, get yourself like a 7 or 8 channel eq that will let you adjust a variety of frequency ranges

He said all his HU has is treble, bass, and fade....

Im not really familiar with that unit, but I would bet that the Front and Rear outputs on that EQ are full range....SO...you should just be able to run the RCA outs from your HU to your Main in on the EQ, and out the Front on the EQ to your speaker amp.
What kind of HU are you running, and what are you running for amps/speakers?
Curious why your thinking you need to run two sets of RCAs Y'd together into the Main input on the Eq....?
Are you running a 4 channel speaker amp and wanting to keep fader adjustment on the HU (which wont happen if you would Y the Front and Rear from your HU together....if you want to fade it to the front, just turn down the gain on the rears)?

Yes, an EQ would be God sent on a HU that doesnt have any kind of Eqing built in.

monstercable150 : i am chill, sorry if i came accross as up tight, just some ppl have told me that you can enter codes with the remote and it will take you to hidden menus, i was seriously askin no sarcasim what so ever.

C. Whammy: yeah the eq that i just got is a 7 band eq.

Bartak1: the head that i am runnin is a dual xdvd710, the reason for the y is because i thought i would want all the signal from the head that i could get into the eq because it has balance, fad, and sub as well as the 7 band adjust. if i y then i will have fader still at my fingertips, not on the head but on the eq. and yes i am running a 4ch amp. hahaha i will list out what i have and you all will prolly laugh cuz it sounds like i went to a swap meet and got all my stuff cuz none of it matches. i already listed the head, amp is a sony xm-554zr, door speakers are all pioneer 3way speakers, haven't installed the subs yet or the amp for them, still not sure if i am gonna put both subs in or just one but they are jl 10wos and the amp i am gonna use is either a linear power or a planet audio not sure on that yet either. like i said earlier bunch of missmatched stuff, but i have two kids and also i am a big duckhunter so i have to kinda stay on a budget or the wife gets upset. eventually i will redo it all with good stuff but i will buy it a piece at a time and save it back till i have everything then install it all at the same time.

sorry kinda drifted off the subject there, so you think i should y or is that dumb? also will it take certain things away like if the song fads to rear itself mine won't do that it will just get quieter in all speakers won't it? i shoulda went with two two channel audio control units prolly.

I have to go in like 2 minutes here, but just quick like....if you Y together the front and rear outputs from your HU before you run them into the EQ, you will NOT have fade adjustment at your HU anymore.

If you want to have the fader on your HU still work right, you will have to use an EQ with Front, Rear, and sub inputs, or else just ditch the EQ idea.
Personally, I would keep the EQ, and forget about having Fade at the HU unless its really that big of a deal...

Ill chime in later with more since Im on my way out the door right now....

yeah that is the plan, is to forget about fade at the head.. the eq has balance and fader controls on it and it is a half din that is what i meant by i will still have control at my fingertips..thanks for the advice though, am glad to hear that you would stick with usin the eq was kinda startin to feel like i wasted my money for a min.

Ok, I didnt realize that EQ was half din and that you planned to put it in the dash...

Should work our great for you then.
Small run of RCAs from the HUs front outputs to the Main inputs on the EQ, and Sub from the HU to Sub on the EQ.......Then Front outputs to the front channels on your amp, and rear outputs to the rear inputs on your amp.......sub outputs to the sub amp.

Dont feel bad about the setup either We all have to start out with something--next thing you know you will have 5 thousand dollars worth of audio in the truck

I dont think you wasted your money at all on the EQ either.
