Post RFI

Can someone help me with a little RFI problem on my 98 F150 with a 4.2 V6. The problem is the CB antenna picks up the noise
radiating from under the hood. It varies with the RPM's so i know it is not the fuel pump. Cleaned up the brushes on the alternator and have grounded everything under the hood(even the hood). Has anybody had success getting rid of this problem.

I'm not an RF guru, but some of the same noise problems occur in mobile audio systems.
1. Have you made sure your power supply wiring is adequate? Make sure you have adequate gauge wire for power.
2. Is your ground wire going directly to the chassis with shortest possible length? Don't use a ground connections from your wiring harness or you are asking for noise problems.
3. Does the antenna wire run along side of power wires or other wires within the factory wiring harness? Try to run the antenna cable away from other wires. Make sure the antenna wire is properly shielded and grounded.

Hope this helps,

Grounds are straight down to the frame. CB has inline filter and power from the battery. No problem there until the antenna is screwed onto the mount. With it off it is quiet as can be. Something is radiating from under the hood. I Just bought a new pair of magnetic suppression wires to see if that works. Used a friends radio and antenna in his truck next to mine to find the noise and it was the worst by the plug wires, coil pack and alternator. Aren't these components supposed to be shielded to eliminate this problem.

ccla,

Which ground was it. I'm also getting the noise thru the amp also. Alpine head unit along with a Phoenix Gold M44. I have not tried to find that problem yet. Thinking about getting a power line filter from Gold-Line.com. Hokes up to the alternator.
