Looking for stock in-dash CD player
I know all you stero guys out there can answer this one. Are the factory Ford head units interchangeable between models. I am looking for a single disk in-dash stock head unit for a '96 explorer. The dimensions look almost identical and the base system has all of the same features that come on a '97 and up F-150.
Also, does anyone have one of these laying around they would like to get rid of?

I believe they are. I JUST posted a stock system in the classifieds on F150 online. It is the so called "premium" setup am/fm/ tape/ with a six disk changer. You would need to lookk behind your head unit and see if it has the wire for the changer. I used it one week before I tore my truck apart to install the CONCERT HALL. Asking 350.00. Dealer price 650.00.

Hey LuvTheC,
I have the same system you have i think (i have a '97 with cassette head unit and 6 disc changer), when you pulled out your stock stuff, what all came out, is there an amp back there too? Where did the cd changer plug into? my head unit has 2 connectors, one seems to be for the speakers, another for power.
Im taking all the stock stuff out soon (tommarrow!), and any tips would be great.
Thanks

S. Adkins,
Removal is a cinch. Yes, there is an amp. However, it is located underneath another panel to the lower left. I just unpluged the amp and taped the end. The other two connections are for the cd changer [square connection] and one for power, acc, & speakers. I did not use the ground from the factory harness. I went straight to the frame/body of my truck. I also did not use the factory speaker wiring. I pulled all new 16 ga, Pheonix Gold. You can pick up a harness anywhere to adapt to the factory harness. There is not allot of room behingd there. It may help to remove the ash tray. and the black piece that sits near the carpet. This may save you some time running rca, speaker wire etc. Depending on what type of setup you are going with. I ended tearing up my whole cab. Several times!! Sound proofed it entirely....... Yes, it may sound a "little extreme." OK ****.....
Good Luck and enjoy your new system.
Be well,
Todd

Thanks.. I need to also remove the amp, but its a great start knowing that there is one,and where its at. Im sure as soon as i find it, ill be competant enough to remove it. Im going to be replacing the current cassette/6 changer "premium" sound with a Kenwood Excelon deck, 10 disc changer, soundstream amps, rockford subwoofers.
I'll get to replacing the stock speakers very soon after. Im looking into some separates, mids in the doors, and tweeters mounted in that side-view mirror pod-type thing. And possibly some mid-bass speakers for the back door stock locations. Then Im finished. Really.(?)

Well i got the head unit and the "amplifier" out today. The amp was a real pain. Tommarrow out comes the cd changer, and then its for sale. Anyone want a stock cassette + 6 cd changer "premium" system? Cheap! (compared to ford's prices) $250!!!!
