CB Newbie

Ok so Im looking at putting CB in my truck but Im pretty new to them and dont know the best ways to mount them. I want to run a dual antenna setup mostly becuase they look sweet. Ive been reading that you should keep em spaced out about half a wave length which I think was 9ft but will work at narrower distances. What would you guys recommend. Would I be better off mounting both but only using one since the antennas would be so close together. BTW I have a flareside bed too.

Hehe .. thanks for your addition in that thread lol !

Sorry I can't answer your question, though, but I thought you'd appreciate the link.

Good luck.

Dual antennas do look good but have a tendency to transmit and receive like a beam antenna "to the front & rear". You may want to try a Wilson 1000 or a K-40 magnet mount on the cab, won't look as good but you will transmit and receive better from all locations "omni-directional" Hook up to say a Cobra 29 peaked out and you will have a nice setup. Just my 2 cent's.

I agree. get the antennas far enough apart (very tough and not attractive) and you'll beam front and rear. Get them too close together (most likely on any 1/2 ton truck) and you'll beam side to side. One antenna will (almost) always work better on a pickup.

I use a Cobra 25 in the truck and a Cobra 29 in my car. Get a C.B. shop to peak and tune it. Some people like to have talkback put on too. That doesn't do anything really but it has helped me a few times to diagnose some mic. problems in the past. Wilson is hard to beat. Have a friend that swears by K-40 also even though I have no personal experience with it.

hmm, since I want to run a dual setup would I be better off just only having one antenna connected and the other there for looks, lol. sounds kinda dumb but my buddies truck has the dual antennas and i love the look.

Get a Monkey Made antenna. They look much more impressive than fiberglass sticks. I recommend running a single antenna, it is much easier to tune a single antenna than two co-phased antennas.

Knarf0486;

I run a uniden pro 520, cause i really don't need a big radio. for the antenna,
I have a Hustler HQ-27 Center load antenna.
Pretty sweet setup, just for talkin on the trails or goin down the interstate to find out info.
SWRs on the antenna are pretty low: 1.28:1 on channel 1/ 1.18 on channel 40. Channel 19, 1.08:1. The antenna is mounted to a 90 degree mirror mount trimmed down, to fit inside the rear driver side bed stake hole. The base of the antenna sits level with the top rail of the pickup bed, and if i want to remove the ant., the mount is hidden darn good.
this setup gives me a clear talk, and pretty good range. sorry to say, no experience with dual setups, but it would look pretty neat.
-20 is in Jax, fl.

It looks pretty small but a wilson "lil' will" is a great antenna. I have one that I've used on a cougar, a grand prix, an escape, and an escort. It works as well as my 2000 does. The reason it's been through 4 vehicles.

Not to mention it's small footprint and hights has it's advantages.

Antennas

I have dual wippers on my 2007 F150 and no problems with reception always receive signal great they are roughly the width of the bed apart on my headache rack. Also make shure your wires are in good shape and the mounts have a good connection that is the only thing i fixed from switching from my old truck. I recommend it, I have heard the the wilson gets better but im not shure never had one. Just my thoughts.

where are you guys with the shifter in the middle of the truck mounting your cb units? I was thinking maybe somehow removing the ash tray, and mounting an external speaker somewhere in the cab? Anyone got any idea, i wanna make it a clean install and not just have it laying around.

I just installed one in my 07 i put mine kinda under were the steering wheel is
its a clean install i was going to put it were my ash tray is but it would stick out to far cutting space for anyone sitting in the middle. Just my two cents

I have the console in the middle so there wont be anyone sitting there. I'm talking about removing the indash ash tray and mounting it in dash with an external speaker.

Put your speaker here

As far as the radio goes, i dont know mines a remote mount so i mounted mine on top of the tray with the speaker beneath it. A regualr CB, u could mount it in the middle console or if u have one the compartments on the roof that has the rails.
