Who does what?
I used to also do car audio/remote starts, but I don't miss it... Maybe once a year, I'll take on a project for a friend, but that's only minimal fiberglass, or a custom MFD enclosure. I just don't find it as nearly rewarding as I used to. It got really tiring dealing with everybody -who thought they knew it all, dirty, stinky cars, cold weather, cut fingers knuckles and wrists, bending in 6 different directions at once. Loose change under the back seats - you shoulda seen my penny collection! Aaah the days!

It's how I've made my living for the past 30 years. It's a great way to ruin your back and get arthritis if you're tall like i am (6'1"). I do audio, security/rem start, cb/2way, phones, fog lights and all the rest of that crap. Now that I'm getting old, I'm not so much interested in doing large systems as they take up my shop space for too long. I can usually make more money, faster, doing deck and two or an alarm and crank out 3 or 4 cars a day. Plus, I'm sick to death of dealing with know-it-all kids trying to tell me how to work on their cars. I like to deal with the older crowd, as they are much easier to deal with and usually have more money to spend. Retirees' motorhomes are good to work on and pay well. They leave me alone to work, which pleases me no end!
I also do a lot of service and repairs, which can pay well when it's busy.
If you're really interested in cars and electronics, it's not bad for a young guy for a few years. I would have something as a back-up for later on, though, as it's kinda hard on the bod. I have a bad back with arthritis and bad knees and if I had it to do again I probably wouldn't have stayed in it as long as I have. You do get to work on some very exotic, and some very cool vehicles. Not to mention the "hood ornaments" that go with them.
I'll post some pics of the system in my truck some day when I get around to taking them...
regards

Thanks for posting the pic frostby, I can glass the heck out of a dash but can't get my sig to work go figure. And yes I just bought a house 2 years ago and am quickly becoming an expert
And yes because the garage is 4 feet bigger than the house I knew it was for me.
Right now I am mostly involved with nav installs for car dealers, but I came up through the ranks as installer, salesman, manager, and everything else you could think of. As far as college I was an elec eng but never finished. I took a long time to get where I am today so if school gives you a shortcut go for it! And without the people all along the way that helped me, like Billy Brown from GA, I wouldn't have the skills I have today.

I don't have the 30 years of experience... heck im only 29. But being an installer has really helped me understand many concepts in my electronics degree. It got rather hairy there for a while dealing with cap's, inductors, filters and networks(not the LAN/WAN kind), but thanks to speakers, and crossovers, it was easy to follow. I'm from the midwest, and there's not much money to be had in the mobile market as an installer - wether it's bestbuy or a homegrown shop. Around here, most of the customers are high school/early college kids wanting a loud bass system. The 30-40 year olds, typically only want a CD player/speaker set for their sig others for christmas/birthdays etc. It's hard to find those people with deep wallets to upgrde and modify everything like NUTHINBUTAFORD is doing. And if there is someone like that - usually they are in trouble with the Law for the way they aquire their money if you catch my drift.
I now work as a BIOMED in a hospital and tinker with everything from lasers to MRI's, the responsibiltiy has certainly gone up, but the manual labor and gone way down. I think i finally found my thing. Although some DR.s can be just as hard to deal with as some of the high school kids that want you to fix their car that they wired up, and doesn't work. And get mad cuz you won't touch it because there isn't a fuse on their 2 guage power wire running through the door jam, and melted on the catalytic converts. -oh the stories there...

Nothinbutaford... your link doesn't work. To post your pic, I clicked on your camera icon by your name, looked at a pic - went to properties, copied the file name with url and all, pasted it on this section and added on the outside. Once you do it once, it's pretty easy.

I do every one of my own vehicles myself.
My goodness, nothing as cosmic and sweet at "frostby" though...
I worked in that industry for a while back around '92-'00.
This time I'm looking into sound quality only, and a stealth appearance.
There was a time (up to my last vehicle, a mini-van) that the 2 isobaric JL 15's and near 1000 watts devoted to those alone was a staple...
You could say my tastes are changing though. I've done the BOOOOOOOM, now I also have less room.
<-----and two kids age 6 & 4 that now have to sit atop the box location.
Don't get me wrong though... Daddy will still be bumpin' when he's drivin' himself!

btw- My latest install was just yesterday... in our church's E350 van... that youth group will be rockin out now! The head unit is a piece of junk from walmart... but I hooked 'em up with a stealth Clarion EQ, a small amp, and some mids and highs... may even throw an old sub in there next week... hee, hee.
