Question Stereo Upgrade

I would like to replace my factory AM/FM - Cassette Stereo with a factory stereo that also has a CD player or maybe a CD changer. I've seen lots of them on eBay, but I don't have a clue about compatibility. Will an upgraded stereo simply plug in using my existing wiring? Or will I need to make some alterations. Most of the units on eBay have part numbers included, but that isn't much help to me unless I can figure out which one I need for a 2000 F-250. Any help would be appreciated.

To put in an aftermarket stereo you will need a few things. One, a wiring harness adaptor that will fit the Ford harness connector. You can actually cut apart the ford harness and solder the wires from the headunit (stereo) harness, but this takes time and can be easy to screw up. Second you will need an installation/mounting kit so that a standard DIN size HU will fit in the dash opening. With that in mind, almost any of the standard DIN sized HU's will fit. I have run JVC, Pioneer, Alpine in my assorted Ford trucks, each with an install kit and wiring harness from Crutchfield. While their prices are higher, their customer service is excellent and the wiring harness, installation kit, and instructions specific to your truck are included. And they have free shipping on items over $199 right now, and another 10% off if you buy HU and speakers.

I ordered from www.cruthfield.com and it was so easy! They included instructions for everything. And it came in 2 days...

He is replacing a factory cassette with a factory cd player.

Cliff,
I haven't replaced factory with factory, but I would think the wiring harness for the cassette player would plug right into the cd player. I could be wrong though. It should also fit almost exactly the some if you use the same year model for each.

Hope this helps, but like I said I could be wrong.

Cliff,

I replaced my stock cassette player in my 2001 S crew with a 6 CD/MP3 changer (OEM Pioneer) from an 04 ranger. Had to cut back support behind dash, then just plugged in. No support for the changer but I really do not need one now.

Good luck.
