Distance from floor to box?

Ok, I am thinking of making a new box and its going to be down firing, but I want to know what a good amount of space is between the floor and my box. I have been told 2 inches a couple times so I have built a couple boxes for some buddies to be 1 1/2-2 inches from the floor. But I want my new one to be perfect So what do you audio gurus suggest for that distance?
Its a 12 inch sub.

Thanks

You need to take into account the excursion of the sub. This will tell you how much to sub is designed to move.

spr_F150 is right on, if you already have the sub, there are a few ways to check. One way is to very carefully push up from the back of it on the cone as much as you can and measure the movement, don't do this if you sub has a paper cone. The other way is to mount it on the edge of a small box, play it and try to get a measurement like that. You have to take in to account that if the sub is new, it will loosen up and have a little more excursion once it's been played for a while.

So pretty much as close as I can get it without the cone/surround hitting? Plus a little extra

Thanks.

I found out my Xmax is .81 inches (one way) so I am planning 1 inch of space.
