New HU = New CD changer ?

Just got back from Best Buy. Looking for a replacement for my deceased HU. (97' w/prem snd)
The geek there says I'll need a new changer too because the deck won't be able to "talk to the stock unit".
Is this true ? This just seems silly that the radio goes out in a modern vehicle and I need to replace the whole works. (Getting a little steamed about this)
How much would a used (Ebay etc) HU run me ?

For what you will probably pay for a used unit just to hook up the six disk cd changer you can get a pioneer deh7400. It looks cool and allows you to put as many mp3s on one cd as you could ever fit in that six disk cd changer.

6 disc changer?
Hell you could almost fit more songs on a single MP3 disc than you could fit into a 12 DISC CHANGER

You'll need a computer (or a nice friend with one) with a CD Burner if you're gonna go the MP3 route.

I would go after market like the other guys suggested, but if you want to replace your stock HU with another stock one, you should be able to get a good deal on one in the classifieds here or on Ebay.

As mentioned, there are two potential routes.

One, replacement of the HU with a aftermarket HU or finding a used one on ebay such that you can operate your existing changer...

My personal opinion doesn't exist here... you know what you want with your system. If you're not looking for the mp3 route and such, then check out ebay or the classifieds and buy a used one (you won't have any problem finding one) or, if you like the thought of putting many hundreds of songs on one CD-R, then get a head unit that plays mp3 format and sell off your changer via the classifieds or ebay...

The choice is yours...

Personally, I haven't missed my changer a single day since I replaced my HU with a Pioneer DEH-P7400. It plays MP3 format and, of course, a regular CD.

I have already sold my stock system or I'd let you make me an offer but, like I said earlier, you shouldn't have ANY problem finding a used system... again, your choice.

Post Best Buy is right

Gordy-
Although my OEM HU is still good, I went through the same thing as you with my 2000 Expy and its 6-CD changer. I even called the dealership about it. The OEM CD changer is NOT compatible with any after-market HU.

SO, I pulled out the 6-CD changer and sold it (still have the OEM HU). Then, I installed an Alpine 7893 HU with CD player and XM ready and the Alpine XM receiver. Best thing I ever did to the truck. With XM, I haven't listened to AM, FM, or played a CD in months.

Hope this helps...good luck with your choice.

Cool

gordy -

Drop me a note if you need the head unit. I have one from my '98 and I'll gladly give it to you. If you need the changer, let me know as well...

Hey Gordy...

I'm getting rid of my OEM HU. Replacing it with a Nakamichi 6CD indash unit...no need for an external 6CD changer. Check it out on eBay...there are occasioally listed. A bit pricey, but then again, you don't need an external changer so you have extra $$$ to play with.

If you need an OEM HU, mine will be up for grabs soon as well

I have seen electronic gizmos that allow the stock Changer to work with Aftermarket HU's and vice versa.

Before I gave up completely, I would call a place like crutchfield and see what they have to say.

Well, I haven't replaced my HU yet. I guess I'm not a good enough cut-throat bidder on Ebay. or too cheap.... ($100???)

So, now I'm seriously considering an aftermarket replacement. the MP3 option sounds great as I am a computer related sort of guy and have a decent collection going. Besides, if I really like any of those old cassettes I should be burning them to CD anyway right ?

I went to Best Buy a couple times. The salesmen turned me off completely to even thinking about getting a stereo there. (Good job.....DUDE) No offense to anyone of you younger guys but I'm 37 years old, and would prefer my truck remain looking "grown up". Stock was ok with me...I'm a Dad and money priorities lay elsewhere, but I really miss my tunes and the boombox just ain't cuttin it.

I do like to rock out and shake the doors at least once a day still though and am worried about finding a suitable replacement, but it must look ....um "elegant", power the speakers well and not be too expensive. Sorry to sound so limp wristed about it....but you get my drift.

So, going with Crutchfield, can they supply me with the EXACT harness and fascia (brackets?) I would need for a quick swap? Can I get something I've described for $100 ?? $200?? $250 without having to add an amp? What sort of wattage should I be aiming for?

Thanks again for all the help. Couldn't do it without you guys.

Gordy

Question

Gordy -

I e-mailed you a pic of the stock HU from my '98. Did you get it? I never heard from you...

I still have the HU and would give it to you if you want...

B-man - Yup I got it. Thanx, but its the wrong unit.
I thought I replied to you via email ??? Thanx for the offer though.

I'm thinking the CD/Mp3 might be kind of nice.
Any opinions on the Pioneer P-5500 ? ($239)
