HU and Amp install in 97
HU and Amp install in 97
O-kay... need some help on an install. I'm not totally clueless, just have'nt done in for 12 years since I was in my hay-day of low-ridin runnin multiple amps, elec. crossovers, etc....
Need a refresher....
I have a 97 F-150 and want to install a detachable face remote pioneer cd HU (can't remember the model number) in place of my stock unit. I want this unit to run my 6" Polks in my doors and my stock rear speakers. I want to run an old Punch 45 mono to an old Fosgate 8" single sub behind my seat.
From what I remember, all I have to do is run my A/C cord from my amp to the head unit, as well as my power wire.
My main question is swappin out HU's. What's the best way to get the old unit out? Am I going to have to buy a wiring harness for my new head unit? And is there a wiring diagram out there somewhere to help me out. I got the Pioneer unit used, so it does not have a wiring diagram, but when I get home, I can post the model number, and maybe one of you guys can point me in the right direction for a wiring diagram?

You will need a wiring harness for your new HU. You can get one from any place that sells car audio (best buy, circuit city, etc.).
For the amp, you will need a power wire, ground wire (same awg as power), remote turn-on & RCA's.

I assume you have the wiring harness that plugs into the back of the Pioneer unit.. you just don't have the manual with the wiring diagram?
If you buy the aftermarket wiring harness to plug into the truck harness (instead of just cutting the Ford harness out).. all ya gotta do is match wire colors. As you see in the diagram on the page from the link above.. there are set colors for each set of wires (i.e. Red for Power, Black for common, Green for left rear speaker, White for left front, Purple for right rear, Gray for right front)..anyway.. these wires should match the Pioneer head unit wires exactly.
That's kind of the standard for aftermarket equipment.
I strongly suggest paying the $3 or so for the aftermarket wiring harness rather than cutting the factory harness out.
Orange wires are for dimmer control, Blue wires are usually for power antenna and amp turn on control.
The DFS alarm wires (if your head unit has this feature) should be odd colored and not match any wire colors on the aftermarket harness.. like a brown wire and some other colors.
Try this link to get the manual for your head unit.. the installation manual is where you'll find the wiring diagram.
