Stock stereo engine whine
Stock stereo engine whine
I have a 98 Expedition with a factory stereo, including the sub. I am up to about 80,000 mile and have developed a whine in the stereo. It goes along with RPM . Since it's factory, I am not sure if the ground would have come loose, if so, anyone know where it's at? Could it be the plug wires also? Do the wires actually need to be cracked for this to happen or a sealed set of wires could still do this? I love the truck, but this noise is killing my drives. Any help, tips, advice would be greatly appreciated.
1st of all, welcome to F150 Online !!
Be prepared to take a lot of notes, because there are a LOT of helpful people on this board.
I would start by checking some of the simple things first:
Be sure the antenna is plugged into the radio securely.
Be sure the coax going to the antenna isn't damaged.
Be sure your antenna is tightly fastened to your truck.
Re-seat the connectors going into the back of the radio.
Eyeball the ground straps under your hood; try to make sure that they are all intact between the engine and the body/frame.
I'm pretty sure the alternator has a noise suppressor tied to it, but I'm not sure if it is internal or not.
If nothing jumps out at you, you can do one of my old tricks:
Remove the drive belt from the alternator and start the truck. See if the whine is still present. If it is, the alternator is not the source. If it is gone, the alternator or something associated with it would be the place to start.
I have read elsewhere on this board that someone replaced their alternator (ouch!!$$) and it cured the whine in their truck.
Good luck and be sure to post whatever the fix is...

thank you both. Do either of you know where the factory grounds are? I assume one on the radio, not sure exactly where it grounds though. Also, in the factory set up, does the amp just run the sub? If not , then I would need to check the ground on it too, but not sure where it's at.
One again, thanks!!
