K&N Air Filter Question
I just added a K&N air Cleaner to my 2002 F150 4.6L w/ATX. I noticed some wierd things while cuirsing at say 60 mph. It seems that the motor is running on the lean side for one, and the second thing I noticed was the tranny is shifting wierd, going from first gear to OD very quickly upon take off. Has anyone else had this problem? Does the computer need to be reset after installing the K&N filter? I called ford regarding the computer reset and they say "No" the MAF sensor should compensate for the extra air flow, or could it be that I'm having tranny problems, which are coencidental. Any suggestion would be appreciated.
Thanks, Bob

disconnect the ....
negative terminal, then turn everything on to discharge any stored energy, radio, headlights, key...then make sure everything is off and reconnect(might be a good time to clean the posts and terminals here and a little delectric grease on the posts will keep the corrosion at a minimum)...start ,let it warm up and take it for a spin...wait a couple of days worth of driving before you start challenging L,s...lol
Hi Bob
IMO...the filter change would not cause those problems. Maybe someone knows for sure, i havent heard of it before.
Be sure the MAF is connected. There maybe another sensor in intake..double ck. connections and wiring ok, air box is tight etc.
If all is ok after rechecking and still have problems, hmmmmmm?
Like Texford said...you can reset PCM...may/maynot help. You could even retry old filter, but, i suspect something else?
Good luck...let us know what happened...OT
BTW...just a tip...done this for years...i use a little vaseline on all the sealing (gasket) material on filter...i think it helps to make a better seal, may even catch some dust?

Oldtimer,
Could it be that air is getting past the K&N seal on an intermittent basis and wacking out the MAF readings causing erratic fuel to air ratio? I notice that the K&N gasket is smaller than the stock filter. What about the shift points...are they related to maf and/ or vacumm?
Thanks, Bob

bob...
let us know how it goes and make sure you check were the MAF sensor plugs in at the bottom of the filter housing on the framre part of the fender.also you may have pull the grommet, that the wires pass through at the botom of the MAF sensor box ,out and it drawing air up through there.
Hi Bob
My K&N filter gasket end was also just abit smaller. Dosent seem to be a problem...for me..recent clean/reoil..just finger + rag wipe inside box/intake tube...no dust/dirt/old oil.
The a/t has electronics involved. Combination of parts/sensors/PCM.... all go together to control shifting. Thats the simple reply, to complicated for me.
If problem continues...is truck under warranty?
Good luck...OT
BTW...Suggestion...get a repair manual...Haynes is a good starter.
Tells about a/t...resetting PCMs and what may happen etc.etc.etc.

Hey Oldtimer,
Looks like an actual tranny issue. It's at the dealer now. They mentioned a over speed/rev sensor going bad...will definitely know by tomorrow what the deal is.
The symtoms I was having:
After warm up and 10 minutes into driving, the tranny would shift from 1st, 2nd, 3rd, O.D. within seconds and the engine would bogg. I couldn't down-shift unless I hit the manual O.D. switch....weird??? or what?
anyway, let you know what happens tomorrow-
Thanks for your suggestions...you too Tex

K&N
I can tell you I was very eager to try my k&n filter...............
Worked fine. Then I got a WMS Velocity Tube. Still no problems. The truck ran great. Then I got a Dynomax Superturbo exhaust. Truck started to kick *** then. After a while I got some running problems like pinging and rough idle. After talking with some Ford Mechanics, the problem was found to be a dirty mas air flow sensor. The K&N was the contributor. I was over oiling it trying to keep the thing looking that pink clean color. What ever you do dont over clean and over oil the K&N....it will cause you alot of heart-ache. Its alot of fustration tryiing to figure out what the hell is the problem. Be carefull! I am back to paper now and the performance is still good.
