I agree with ya but dang you gotta have fun with your truck and I think this is a really cool mod as you do not see it much. I have ordered mine and I am hoping to get it completed by next weekend. This site is just 2 sweet and packed full of info.

Hey guys, just had a thought - while I have the tailgate disassembled, I might as well go ahead and paint the tailgate handle to match the truck like others have done. I have been waiting to do this, but now seems as good a time as any.

How are you guys running the wires for this install? Are you drilling any holes? Thanks

The wires in the tailgate run out a drainhole on the bottom. To get the wires in the cab, I ran mine through an existing grommet in the body. The wires are run along the inside of the frame and tied up. All in all, a fairly clean install.

Question Removal????

OK, I understand how you are running the wires, but my question is...

What if you want or need to remove your tailgate??????
Might it be worth the extra few minutes and maybe couple $$$ to put some kind of plug on the wiring harness, like just behind the bumper or something. This may still give you the option to remove the tailgate if needed?!?!?!?!

I do not know, as I do not have one of the in my hands yet (but it be coming soon)!!! Just a thought before the install.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK BEFORE I DO IT!!!!

THanks All!!!

I don't ever plan on taking my tailgate off. BUT, the manufacturer of my kit thought people might like to remove their tailgates. There is a plug right where the wires come out of the tailgate. It is a 2-pin flat plug.

I was trying to get around naming the manufacturer because I don't remember for sure which one it is. I looked back through the JC Whitney catalog and they don't name the manufacturer. I think I have a PopLock.

If you get a tailgate lock and it doesn't have a plug, all you'll need is a 2 pin flat harness (like half of the regular 4-pin flat trailer harness). It couldn't cost more than a couple of bucks at the local auto parts store.

I would feel pretty confident that everyone who manufacturers these locks would know that the Ford tailgate is quick removable and would put a plug on their harness. I would think the locks kits have to be custom.

Hope this helps answer your questions...

My Pace-Edwards has the two-flat plugs also. Did not get to install this weekend - wife had other plans for me. However, I did pick up a new Alpine headunit this weekend, so I had no problem completing her wishes!!!

OK- five months later and I finally got this thing installed!!!! Overall, not a big deal. Was not too impressed with the craftsmanship of the unit, but once I did a few mods, it seems to be working great. Here are a few helpful hints:

1) Instructions say to route down driver side, go through firewall, and then route to passenger side. BS - found wires under door sill on driver's side (pink/ yellow and pink/ black) that I spliced into. Also found a plugged hole under the driver's floor mat (under carpet) that I pulled out the plug and ran the wires through. Ended up cutting out about three feet of extra wiring and absolutely did not need the extension wire that they sold me. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON IT!!!

2) Aluminum plate holding locking device was not cut deep enough to go around inside of tailgate handle. There were pencil marks on the plate to where it should have been cut, but they missed it by about 1/2 inch. Had to get out the grinder to cut it further. This may have been just a mistake on mine.

3) Once it was all installed and I made sure it worked, I slammed the tailgate shut and "BOOOOOIIIIIINNGGGGGGG". Repeated it a few times and realized that this same aluminum plate was so thin that it was springing back and forth whenever you closed or opened the tailgate - very cheap sounding. So, I took off the access panel, cut a piece of wood that would fit between the plate and the inside of the tailgate, drilled holes through the plate, and attached the wood to it. Problem solved. Either the mfg. needs to use thicker aluminum or they need to add spacers to keep this from happening.

Install would have taken half as long if I had known all of this in advance, but I guess this is how we all learn. Glad to get it in though, especially now that I have the '01L tail lights (would like to keep them ).
