Question for those with remote starters
Question for those with remote starters
I'm wondering if the factory keyless entry system still works after remotely starting the truck? I'm not sure what disables the keyless entry when the truck is running after being started with the key. I'd guess (and hope!) the position of the keyswitch is what does it.
I'm about to get serious about a remote starter (again).
Thanks.

I just checked my truck, if you want to use your factory KEYFOB to unlock your door after your truck is started remotely your Screwed In NC, if however you want to use the KEYFOB that comes with the remoter start system, you can....sorry, i couldn't resist that play on words.....ok now seriously, I cannot use my FORD KEYFOB to unlock my doors after the truck is running, whether it is started from a remote or with the key. Have you thought about the keypad mod if you don't have it already? you can open your doors with that running or not.

I have a DEI551R Keylesss Entry/Remote Start unfortunately for me my truck did not come with factory keyless entry. Anyway I read in the manual that the DEI551R system can be programmed to be activated by the factory remote.

My truck had the starter installed by the previous owner and it only has one keyfob. I can unlock and lock the doors while the truck is running. I am not sure of the model number but the brand on the back of the keyfob is Automate
LOL, S'CrewLoose
I'm gonna give you that one - not too bad. Side note, I kinda wish I had of used S'crewed in NC, but oh well, too late now.
Anyway, thanks for letting me know that the factory keyfob will not unlock the truck when running no matter what method was used to start.
*smacks forehead*
I didn't even think of the keypad. Actually...............my truck came with a keypad. That's the answer to my quandry.
Problem is solved!

Lean, not sure what you mean by that question, what factory system are you refering to, the factory remote start or the factory keyless entry? If you are refering to the factory keyless entry, i'm sure it just uses a circuit lockout on start for sme safety/legal reason...if its the factory remote start your refering to, i'm sure it bypasses that same circuit lockout......but to tell the truth...this is all just a big guess... How'd I do, tight enough?

I had the Viper alarm/remote start installed by the dealer before I took delivery of the truck. It totally replaced the factory keyfob although the factory keyfob still works. The Viper keyfob has four buttons and is expandable for other functions like windows up/down, or open bed lid etc.
Button #1 arms and disarms the alarm. Holding buttons #1 & #2 simultaneously starts or shuts off the engine. The range is surprisisngly good and I can start the truck from pretty far away. The truck will run for 15 minutes before shutting itself off and the time intervals are programable to run longer, shorter, or continuously. The alarm still funtions normally while the engine is running. If the alarm is set off the engine will continue to run unless the brake pedal is depressed, this will shut off the engine and set off the alarm if it's not already triggered.
I usually start it from inside the house and let it run for 3-5 minutes before I get in and drive away. If it snowed the day before I'll let it run until the cold stuff's all melted away
It's real nice not having to chisel your widows clean. Just hop into an already warm truck and head out. I wish I had heated mirrors too! The same goes for the sumer time, the A/C cools the truck cab before you get in. The only hitch is that regardless of heating or air conditioning modes, you have to remember to leave the defroster and fan or A/C and fan on in advance!! If you dont the engine will still warm up but the cab will remain unaffected.
WOW! Sorry for the lengthy reply. I hope this is helpful to you. If you have any questions feel free to post here or E-mail me.
Good luck.

I have a Viper 550ESP and it works just like Le Pew says. The only thing is while the truck is running with the remote start and the alarm active you can open the door with the key pad but it will not disarm the alarm. So if you open the door with the keypad and get in the truck you have to disarm the alarm with the key and hitting the valet button the correct amount of times. It can be set between 1 and 5 times to disarm the alarm. You have to ask your installer what they set it for. Additionally the Viper can be set to run either 12, 24 or 60 minutes on the remote start. The bottom line is that the Viper replaces the factory functions of the keyless entry so that you do not have to carry two key fobs, Although they still work there is really no reason to carry the factory key fobs. The door keypad is still functional for emergency purposes. When I researched this I found that the Viper and a couple other brands sold by DEI had the longest operating range. I know that the Viper sales information says the range of the 550ESP is about 1/4 of a mile. That was one of the selling points for me. As well as the PATS bypass unit they sell and the way it functioned with the remote start. Just my two cents.
If you put the remote starter into "valet" mode you can use the factory key fob. Your factory keyless entry system is still 100% functional! A proper remote start install uses a "PATS Bypass Module". PATS stands for Passive Anti Theft System. This module basically tells the factory system to do whatever the aftermarket alarm does, and prevents the factory alarm from being triggered when the truck is remote started.
The GEP module (the thing that controls all the lock/unlock functions, as well as the keyless functions) disables the key fob functions when the truck is started, regardless of whether it was with remote start or key. I did extensive research into this before I got my Hornet 553T, because these factory systems are extremely difficult to work around and integrate into. I found that it is nearly impossible to use the factory keyless and an aftermarket remote start together, so I went with the Hornet/Viper that does both. Now my Viper key fob is the only one I have, although the factory key fob would still work, as long as the remote start was not activated. If I unplugged my alarm, I could effectively use the factory keyless entry just as I had before I got my alarm. I have heard that it is even hard enough if you use Ford's own remote start system to get everything to work seamlessly. My recommendation is to just get the full featured alarm and replace the factory keyless system with the alarm's. That is the easiest way to bypass the GEP module's functions.
Hope this answers your question better.

This is just as easily accomplished by putting your remote starter in valet mode. You can still remote start your truck and use your factory keyfobs, but the alarm will not be active in this mode.

I have the Crimestopper remote starter installed in
my MY2000. I can use the key fob for keyless entry
purposes whether or not the truck is started via
remote or key insertion. And yes, it is a real joy not
having to scrape off the windshield anymore!!!!!
Here in NW New Jersey, it seems to ice more than it
snows. so it comes in very handy.
Don't think about a remote starter, just buy one.
