exhaust, chip, filter questions

I have a 98' F150, 5.4L extended cab. I have recently started pulling a 25' travel trailer and I need more power. I just purchased a K&N filter (not the FIPK yet). One dumb question about the filter: Do I reinstall the black cover over the filter or leave it off? I've seen pictures with the cover off and I'm not sure if that's just to show the filter or what.

My other questions:
1.) Which aftermarket exhaust system will provide the most HP?
2.) Should I put in a computer chip and if so which one is the best.

Thanks.

I have a 1998 F150 with the 5.4 liter also. I put the K&N FIPK on mine, Flowmaster muffler single inlet dual outlet from the cat converter back and a superchip which I ordered from this website. The chip made the biggest difference in power and in the transmission shifts, I am satisfied with its performance.

The picture that you saw may have been of the 5.4 with the FIPK because the filter just sits on the end of the mass air sensor. I couldn't feel a very noticeable power gain when I installed my FIPK, I'm sure it did help out but it looks cool too!

hey colo

As far as the chip goes I would talk to Mike Troyer. look for him in the chip forum. If you are going to tow you might want a flip chip with a daily driving side, and a towing side.

If you replace your exhaust be careful not to put to large of a diamiter pipe on. Sometimes if you go to a larger pipe you can loose lower rpm power.

Hi coloFord,

If you'd like some advice, please feel free to give us a call, we've done all the research on which exhaust systems are best for these vehicles (from a torque standpoint, they all make pretty good hp but it's the low-end torque that really makes the difference in towing), as well as what you can expect from the Superchip, and the some of the other best bang-for-the-buck mods to help you with your towing, etc.

We'll be happy to go over all of that with you in detail, so you can give it some thought before making your decisions, we're happy to help fellow F-150 Online participants. We're open Monday thru Friday from 10am to 7pm Eastern time, and our number is just below.

Hey Don C.,

You're never going to believe it, I've started to write you this note a half-dozen times but never finished it, but it was seeing your silver 2001 Lightning that finally helped me to decide on silver for my new Lightning!

Picked it up a week ago, after seeing 15-20 Lightnings at our Rally at VMP. We were at the dealership on Friday to pick up a new truck for my wife, she got a 2001 F-150 Lariat, and while there, I saw that they had 4 new Lightings, 2 white, 1 black, and this silver unit. I drove it, but walked away. Then the next day at the track, after talking to Brian K, a long-term customer of ours, as I turned away from talking to him, I made the final decision that instant & I whipped out the cell phone and told them to write it up as I was walking away from Brian K. I didn't tell anyone until after I took delivery.

It was seeing your silver '01 Lighting in your signature line that made me decide to get a silver one, previously I had wanted white, but after seeing the silver in your signature, and then in person, I just had to have silver.

So for what it's worth, thanks for your unknowing role in helping me to select my Lightning!
