E-Fan override switch
E-Fan override switch
I promise guys I searched and I've been reading posts for the last two days. I'm trying to figure out how you guys with the Troyer fan kit wired in your manual over ride switches. For one just in case something goes wrong I can turn them on or off and two I'd liketo be able to shut the second fan off in the winter. I've also seen that some wired in a light that comes on when the fan does this would be another nice feature. Is there a rating for the switches? Did the guys that moved their controllers to the cab or other locations replace all the wiring for the fans and power? I want to see some diagrams that's what I'm really looking for. Thanks

Hmmm .. not much luck getting help, eh?
Ok - for the overrides you'll want to use additional relays; one fer each fan, since you don't have access to the 'coil' terminal on the relays embedded on each controller - which is unfortunate as it would make this really easy.
[OPTIONAL - on the above point, consider using the controller relays to drive very large Bosch 60-80A relays instead for absolute bulletproof over-engineering. This will make overrides easier as now you can switch the coils for those directly as well].
In essence each of these ( 40+A) relays will be switched using any small SPST switch of yer choice - it won't be carrying full rated fan current, which makes this both safer/flexible/easier to do.
The N.O contacts for each will do the heavy lifting - one side to the battery via a fuse - same rating as the ones in the kit - and the other spliced into each fan's (+) lead.
For the Leds - either a 12V indicator Led, or a normal Led with appropriate resistor - (+) to each fan's (+) lead, negative to ground. Fuse appropriately ( a very small fuse) for safety.
Be advised that the Leds will illuminate while the fans are freewheeling at speed - this will let you know that the fans are not seized, lol). If you don't want that, you need to hook up the Leds to the relay coils you are connecting yer override switches to.
[OPTIONAL - consider adding a couple more Leds to indicate when the Controllers are energizing each fan - use different colour Leds.]
[OPTIONAL - consider adding an override switch to turn off the A/C fan - at speed (say on the freeway) this controller will still cycle the A/C fan - it don't need to run. This is as easy as adding another switch inline with the A/C trigger wire. Ensure you use a Conspicuous indicator for this - it's NOT something you want to forget to leave off!]
Make yerself a diagram - sorry, no time to draw one fer you at the moment - Google/Search will pull up many that will help - you need some skin in this game - or, if you are lazy/disinclined, perhaps Steve can throw some good ones up - he's got a tremendous library of them, lol. Also, check out the 2 linkies below.
Lastly - make a HARNESS to connect everything correctly. And - use the best fuse blocks, relays, terminations, hardware, and electrical best-practices (solder, waterproofing, grommets, wire loom, EMF supression diodes, etc) or don't bother.
Last thing you need is to add unreliability into the equation by doing these modifications.
BTW - a good read while yer on the can

G'luck. This is not difficult, but requires good planning and a methodical approach, attention to detail, and some patience.
