SPAL FAN-PWM-V3 e-Fan Controller
If you're using this controller, please let me know how you like it.
And, if you please, a few more specific questions:
Did you tie the included temp sender wire into the OEM temp sensor, or did you install the optional SPAL screw-in temp sensor additionally? If you did install a SPAL temp sensor, where did you put it?
I downloaded the manual from SPAL's website and it mentions "known issues" with using the OEM temp sensor on Ford modular engines (if the low temp is set higher than ~200°F). Since my 2000 5.4L has a 195°F (stock) thermostat, I'm thinking that's about the range I'd want to set the low temp.
I did the install on my Troyer e-fan kit, but that was nearly 4 years ago and I've honestly forgotten what temps I set the fans to. Now one of fans doesn't run at all and the other runs constantly, so I definitely need to do something while the weather is relatively cool.
Thanks for any help you guys can give me.

I've been using the Spal controller for a couple of years. It works fine and is easy to program. You do need an accurate source to take temps for the turn on points, I use a Scangauge2 which reports from the pcm.
I'm racking my brain to remember where I got the temp sensor input from, but it is not coming to me. I know that I tried the Spal temp sensor, screwed into the block drain, and it would not work correctly.
I switched out the controllers from a Troyer kit as well. The Derale fans are fine, and have been working well for four years now. Those controllers should be illegal. I went through four of them before I gave up and bought the Spal.
I believe my turn on temps are 195* and 205*. If you have the original Troyer instructions, I'm sure the turn on temps are discussed there.

Thanks for the info. I remember the Troyer instructions included turn-on temp advice, but I'm not sure if I can find them. I'll look through the garage tomorrow.
I don't know why Troyer doesn't sell an "upgraded" kit with these controllers, but from what I've been reading here lately people are having better luck with the newer kits.
I was planning on using the digital odometer trick to get the temps. That info comes straight from the PCM, if coolant temps are available that way. Or I've been thinking about getting an Edge to replace my MicroTuner, so I might do that before the fan controller swap.
