i am wondering if anyone has tried to build there own instrument panel?

i want to replace the cluster with some kind of aftermarket probably the auto meter cobalt digital.. but i want to keep my check engine light turn signals etc. is it just a matter of finding the right wire and plugging in a bulb for each of those lights?
