Noises after installing K&N Gen II kit
Im not talking about the the noise the filter makes as it sucks in more air, this noise Im talking about only happens during the first few miles after start up. It happens when you slow down like when making a turn, its kinda of a howl/whistle. It will go away if you hit the gas. I checked for air leaks around all the connections, I cant find any. The only thing I can think it might be is when I installed the kit, I removed that black box (by the throttle body) cus it wouldnt line up, and used that long "L" shaped tube they give you. This all started after I installed the kit. Any info would help, Thanks in advance!

I too just installed the K&N FIPK on my 97 4.6L. I know the noise you are talking about however, mine seems to have gone away after a day or so. Anyway, the fix is to put the "black box" back in the line. There is mention of the noise and the fix in the K&N instructions. They say it happens in "isolated instances" on the 4.6L. If you don't have your instructions, let me know and I will be happy to fax them to you or I can post just the required fix instructions here. I have had my F-150 less than a week, so I am just finding my way too!
Is that where they tell you to cut the end off the black box?

When you replace the little black box the noise goes away...it acts like a muffler.

I had the same problem. The black box is called a resonance dampener. I cut off about a half inch of the plastic and cut the L-shapped tub for a better fit.
I had a good email from K&N on the subject. They plan on mentioning the noise in future printing of the instructions. Their explanation was that it is more common when in cold weather. I have had mine in for a while and now that the temp is in the low 30's every morning I hear it if I coast down a hill and let off the gas. But it still works great!

I'm having the same howl/moan with the stock air intake modified. Only noticed it when it started getting cold and did not have it last winter b4 mod was done. It must be the lack of a silencer insert(hence the name) that is causing the resonance. Of course the insert is too mangled from the removal process to reinstall...rats!
Mine also only happens after coasting and rpm's have dropped to 900-1200, then upon light acceleration it starts howling. Thought at first it was the power steering pump since it only happend after turning.

Great forum, have been reading messages for past couple of weeks. Installed KN Gen 11 this morning and seems to make quite a difference. Left the black box inline and haven't been getting any noise.

I'm bringing this topic back to life because this is the same noise I have after installing my Air Force 1 kit. I never removed the black box and I still got the noise. Is there a fix if you still have the noise with the black box in?? Please help, the noise is really annoying!
Yes, the AirAid does it too, whistles like mad!! I can't see any coraltion with the cold though, I live in FL. It seems to do it in lower gears while driving. As soon as I let of the gas it stops. I thought about swithcing to the K&N but it seems to do the same thing. (Note: I just called airaid about this and the guy says it is the t/b spacer/poweraid I put on) I will remove this tonight and see if this is fixes problem and re-post)

I've never have any kind of noise like that with my Airaid. I'd look to see if a vacuum hose got pushed off or pinched also.
Only noise I get I can't explain. Just notice that it happens everytime I go WOT and people look at me like "..what the???" Or that might just be because I'm passing them....
