Post Radar Detector

Does anyone have a radar detector installed somewhere other than above the rear view mirror? Looking to install mine, but it is way to visible in that spot. Looking for suggestions, thanks!

Mustang-
Where excatly is it? Right in the center of the dash? I've thought about mounting it all the way to the left of the dash in the corner, but I'm wondering if it would pick up radar the same...

I have mine mounted in an overheard console. The console has a pull-down bin in which you mount the detector. The bin is complete with a power receptacle which turns off when the hatch cover is lifted back into place in the console. I'm sure the cops know about these, but how could they prove you had it in the "on" position? I'm pretty sure if they managed to find it, they would probably write you up just for trying to be devious.

However, mine seems to work fine from there and they are not illegal in MN. Has saved my rear a couple of times already. The bad part is that by the time you hear the alert, they've "made" you. If you slow down fast, they might be inclined to drive on by. Depends on their mood, I think.

I've also heard of people mounting the detectors behind the grill, but I don't know how they deal with the rain/snow/dirt, etc.

I have a "shelf-it" shelf in my truck and I have it sitting on some stuff to elevate it just enough to clear the front edge of the shelf. There is just enough room for the radar detector to "look" out the window. I also have a black tinted strip across the top of my windshield, so this really helps to hide it to. From the outside, you can not see the shelf or the radar detector. I ran the wire from the center of the shelf to the driver side, then down inside the plastic column that goes down the window, then behind the dash in to the fuse box. It I think I tapped into the radio fuse, so it only comes on when the truck is on, or off and listening to the radio. I really like it this way. Just letting you know.

Cool

With what I've seen the thing that draws my attention to them is the dangling wire going straight down. Mine is mounted above the rear view but I wired it in directly and rant he wire through the headliner and down the door pillar. I think that it's pretty hard to see without being close.

I've got a Bel 815iR remote radar detector. The antenna is mounted behind the front grille. The control/alarm unit is mounted on the upper inside of the instrument panel, between the speedo and tach. Very stealth installation.

Wow, a lot of different setups. I think I'll just relocate the rear view a little closer to the headliner. I'd like the detector to rest on the mirror, but the damn thing is like half way down the winshield! I don;t think it would be too hard to remove and re-stick....???

Jaymz,

Where did you get your overhead console and how much did it cost? Been looking for one with no luck. Really want one that has the radar detector compartment.

It's not that obvious when mounted above the rearview because of the factory tint at the top of the windshield. Also, it is the first part of the truck to top the hill when "The Man" is on the other side of that hill. I would say that AT LEAST 90% of the time my detector will pick up the radar long before I'm in range to have my picture taken. Since it is elevated above the other cars on the road, it will pick up the "reflections" of the radar as it is bouncing off of other cars.

Wolvrin- I've seen the overhead consoles w/ radar compartment advertised in Sport Truck magazine. It's in one of those pages of advertisements, I forget which company sells them. It might be worth flipping through at the market next time. Unfortunately, I have the Ford stock console which has no room for a detector.

Mine also sits above the rear view mirror. I can't see it at all from the outside due to the factory windshield tint. However, the cop that pulled me over was able to see it quite clearly as indicated by his smirk. I tied the detector power lead into the compass/temperature gage power on the overhead console. Very clean and no wires to show.

Well, if I can get the picture to work, here's a pic of my OH console w/hideaway radar detector bin. the walnut trim is not part of the package; added by my conversion dealer. I'll also try to add a second pic of the console with the bin pulled into the down position (phasers on "stun").

I'm not sure of the mfg., but I think I can find it if you give me a day. The same one is pictured at www.stylinconcepts.com, but you'll have to look in the Chev pickup section; it's not in the Ford section.

Note that the back section of the console also has a pulldown hatch with another power outlet. I bought this little magnetic cell phone holder that sticks on the console, and now I have the cell phone up and out of the way, too...no crap on the dash to ram my knee into or wires running all over. Slick!

Car & Driver had an article about tinted windshields and their effects on radars. Tint reduced the effectiveness of the radar detector. Probably a better idea to mount the radar away from the tinted part of a windshield.

Jaymz-
That thing is bitchin'! Thanks for taking so much time to help me out, I really appreciate it. I'll let you know how the finished "mounting" turns out! Was that thing easy to install, and what do I do with my stock OH console....??? That might be a real problem. Thanks again.
