Cool Helpfull exhaust experience!!

I enjoy this site and would NOT try to take any business away fom it. I own a 1998 F150 XLT 4x4, ex-cab, with the 4.6. I was on the verge of spending $300.00 or more on a new cat-back system. I had no idea the dual exhaust out the back was COSMETIC ONLY!! You get NO performace benifits at ALL!! I had no idea because I'm not an experienced engine person. I went to a local muffler shop and they were great. They cut off my exhaust and held up 5 or 6 different mufflers for my wife and I to listen to. I thought I wanted a flowmaster 50 series. The guy said you have to be carefull with too much noise. He said it sounds good in the beginning but it gets to be bothersome after awhile. You want to be able to talk in a normal tone while on your way to the lake. We ended up going with a Dynomax 14" muffler with a 3" stainless tip. The total cost for everything was $167.99. I was afraid the Dynomax wouldn't have the performance of a flowmaster. I was wrong. There were 5 mechanics on site and 3 owned Dynomax and 2 owned flowmasters. We enjoy the new sound and performance. The sound is perfect for us. We can defenitly tell it sounds mean but not too loud we have to scream at each other while driving. Hope this helps. I also installed the K&N Generation II air filter kit. It looks good and was easy to install.

I made a mistake in my post. I had a Magnaflow Muffler installed not a Dynomax. Not sure why i got the two confused. I dont think the Dynomax has the performance of a Flowmaster or Magnaflow.

I know that Dynomax isn't mentioned a whole lot on this website, but I had one put in last April and I really like it. My fiancee drove off in my truck yesterday in front of a small crowd and it turned everyones head. It's not so loud that that it is annoying but loud enough that my 5.4 stands out.

Question

TexasAG,

Is there more than one model for the DynoMax?
I had a DynoMax system on a '84 F150 and liked it. Not that much louder than stock, but has a little rumble to it and adds some power.

That's what I'm looking for on my new truck. Is that what the DynoMax system did for your truck?

Glad you pointed this out Rich. A lot of folks have spent big bucks on bolt-on type "cat-back" systems, and realized no performance increase. That's ok, if all you want to do is change the sound of your truck, but it's costly. Consider this: a cat-back system for a late model Corvette runs about $1000, and essentially, it's a new set of mufflers! You've got to get rid of that super-restrictive Y-pipe in the middle to really feel some added punch when you step on it.

could be wrong here but a Flowmaster 50 series is what I have and the noise or drone was eleviated with the Delta series. I luv it....I went to alot of shops and the one who sold them all (flowmaster, magnaflow, jardine, dynomax, borla etc..)was very helpful. He said teh flowmaster may bust a weld but it will not get louder with age like the magnaflow and other glass packed mufflers will. I would also pose this? Jack Rouche (forgive me if I spelled his name wrong) isn't gonna put a half *** system on a truck he is endorsing nor would all the street rod racers choose flowmaster if they sucked.....just my 2 cents....to each our own

I put a flowmaster 50 on my pickup and love it. It sounds just right. On the highway you can hardly hear it. I think it is the way to go.
