Camping World has an electronic compass abut the size of a radar detector that sells for about $90 and it is called the Co-Pilot.

See if you can get one of the overhead units on the 2000 to work in your truck from the parts department at your local ford dealer.

Lightbulb Electronic Compass

Does anyone know where I can buy one of these?
Ford sells them built into the mirror but I was looking for something less than $200.00.
Even a good analog one would be nice.
The analog ones I've tried haven't worked.

54regcab, the Gentex electrochrom mirror w/compass from the ford dealer is 144.00 plus tax. The only difference is no outside temp reading.

Check out www.donnellye.com They have a nice mirror that dims automatically and has a compass and an outside temperature display. I put one in my truck in less than 1 hour. The hardest part was getting the temperature sensor mounted under the bumper.

Hey Davek,

How about a little more info on the install. How does the temp sensor get outside. How does the mirror install inside. Power comes from? etc?

TIA

Ok. It's been a little while since I installed it, but I think I can remember...

First of all, let me say that I put it in a 1997 F-150.

The mirror installed inside on the original button on the windshield. The originial mirror just pulls off and the new one goes right on.

I ran the wiring harness for the mirror under the front of the headliner and down the drivers side pillar under the plastic trim piece. For power, the mirror is supplied with a clamp on connector to attach to the wiring harness under the dash. You connect it so that it's only on when the truck is on.

I ran the temp sender through a grommet in the firewall just above the brake pedal. I cut the wire to the temperature sensor and spliced it back together inside the cab so that I could keep the grommet intact. The temperature sensor has a very long cable on it and I just ran it down the drivers side along an existing wiring harness and down to the air dam under the bumper. The temperature sensor has a clip on it that I just clipped to the air dam.

The only other thing I can think of is the ground connection that I put on somewhere under the dash. Can't remember exactly where, though.

That's about it. Nothing much to it. The hardest part was figuring out where to mount the temperature sender.

Hope this helps.

The compass is "calibrated" from the factory. Basically, they send you a diagram of the United States with different zones on it. You pick the zone that you live in and program the mirror to use that zone for it's general calibration. Then, you set up the mirror for it's fine tuning and drive around in a circle (in a parking lot or something) until it figures out exactly which direction is which.

The mirror comes with the instructions to set it up and I think they're also on the web site.

That Co-Pilot Compass from Camping World is calibrated the same way. I live in a cul de sac and my neighbors thought I had lost it when I drove in a circle 3 times, stopped and then did the circle back the other way to be sure.

OK I'm sold on the $144.00 from Ford.
I'll have to call Ben Sacther mootrs and see if it is that price there.
If Ben Satcher or Ford has upped the price is anyone interested in working up a deal for the donnelly one like they did last time?
Maybe Roger can help us out on this one.
