Post Stillen intake

This month's issue of Super Ford features an article on the installation of the Stillen intake kit. It uses the K&N filter and 2 molded plastic tubes of pretty large dia. It also includes what appears to be a new airbox which attaches to and draws air from the wheelwell. Has anyone seen one of these units "in the flesh?" The combination of high flow filter and cold air intake might be better than either K&N or Airaid.

Thumbs up

StrangeRanger,,

I have the Stillen intake installed on my 97 F150. I love it!! This combined with my other mods has made a noticable change in the way my truck responds. Prior to the Stillen intake I had the K&N setup. However, I had some problems with it rubbing on a few wires. I believe this has been addressed with their "New Generation." My only concern with K&N, in addition to the above mentioned, was sucking in hot air. With the Stillen Intake it rest nicely centered in the second half of the factory air box. Which in turn is forcing cooler air onto the filter. In addition, it also protects the filter from dirt and water!? I think.....

I might ad the guys and gals at Stillen REALLY know their sh*t.

Todd

Question

So, I'm confused! I installed the WMS Velocity Tube, that utilizes the stock air box while replacing the restrictive snorkle with a 3" tube through the fender well. I get unrestricted air flow (biggest restriction being the MAS) along with cool air from inside the fenderwell. This mod was only $89.00 plus shipping. I don't know the cost of the Stillen system, but (performance wise) does it give any improvements or advantages over the WMS system?

I don't think this has any thing on the WMS tube, just my .02 worth. I just finished my own tube mfg it out of 3" PVC and used the origianl hoses. I had carved out my silencer in the stock elbow and the low end response sucked. So, I had to order a whole new factory elbow to replace it. I cut off the hoses from the old elbow and used them on the 3" PVC, this works much better.

Here is an e-mail response I got from Stillen.

OUCH! That's $300 more than the WMS Velocity Tube! BigRed2, you have any pictures of the PCV Mod you did? Sounds interesting, and much more cost effective! What's the total you have invested in time and parts?

PaulT, sorry no pics available, but here goes a brief parts and assembly description.

I took 1ea 3" 90 degree elbow that makes the curve from the TB to the air filter canister, 1ea 3" to 4" adapter that attaches to the large air filter canister hose and 1ea 3" male adapter that goes to the TB hose. I assembled all the adapters and elbow with regular 3" PVC and clamped on the original hoses that I cut off the stock elbow. All parts total under $12 and labor 2-3 hours.

This project left the stock elbow unusable and basically trash, but I already ruined it by removing the silencer. I now get much better exceleration at both the low end and high RMP range. Probably close to what you experience with the WMS tube.
