I have a Weather Guard Chest Box. Originally the local shop here ordered a 60", but due to the indention in front of the wheel well i had to go with the 55". The top of it sits flush with the top of the bed rail and is weather proof not water proof. It cost me about 300.00.
If you want to see a picture of it e-mail me at layugwr@fnbnet.net ------------------

Post Toolboxes

I'm thinking about saving the 2 grand on a supercab and just getting a toolbox for lockable, weatherproof storage space. Any suggestions on what brands are best? Also, what's the best way to mount them? I think I prefer the style that fits completely in the bed, not over the rails. I saw a sharp looking Penda plastic model for about $280. I've seen Rubbermaids for pretty good prices.
Thanks!

I have a Delta toolbox I paid $100.00 for used. (about 229.00 or so at Lowes)
Never had any water problems.
Over the rail is better IMHO because it lets you still load plywood.
I once had a plastic box and gave it away cause I hated how cheap it was made.
Aluminum the only way to go !!!
Use a mounting kit instead of drilling holes in your truck.

I had a plastic on the rail toolbox for the past 7 years. If you are going to install a toolbox spring for the extra money to get a metal one. After a couple of summers a plastic on the rail toolbox will bow in the middle and start to look crappy. Alluminum boxes are not that much more money than a plastic one. I have an aluminum on the rail box and it cost me $150 new at an agriculture store here in Texas.

Bear, I'd stay away from plastic. Most I've seen look cheap. I got a aluminum in the bed box from Sam's Wholesale for $165. I don't remember the brand name but I've seen the same box with several different names for $250 to $350. It has a single lid which is offset to rear of the truck (so you can open with out hitting rear window). I got around the plywood problem by making mounting bracket which bolt in where front tie down brackets were and stabilized the box by putting legs on the corners near the tailgate. The box is about 5 inches off the floor and sits about 5 inches above the rails. It looks good, is solid and best of all I didn't have to drill any holes in the truck. If you decide to do this let me know and I'll describe the brackets.

I looked at most manufautrers when looking for an aluminum tool box. There is quite a price difference. But I found that the quality of construction of the Better Built boxes that Wal-mart sells was as good if not better than the more expensive boxes. And, it was only $170. The lid was supported with two sperate pieces of angle versues only retangular support like the Delta. Also, it had a lift spring (proper name?) at both corners in lieu of one in the middle.

When I was looking price wasn't a real big concern, but I just couldn't see spending the extra money.

If you look under the bed rails, there are slots already there that the factory rail covers enter into. Though I did have to drill through the plastic, I didn't make any new holes in the sheetmetal.

Lowe's Home Improvement Center carries the Delta brand toolboxes. I purchsed the aluminum "deep" over-the-rail box. The lid opens towards the rear. It is lockable. It can be easily opened from either side while standing outside the truck. It is deep enough for full grocery bags. It'll also hold small suitcases, a bag of golf clubs, or many other items that you'd like to keep out of the rain! Even though the box is deep, it still has about 8-inches usable space below it so you can still carry plywood and other material without having to remove it. I paid around $200 for the box. Looks great and is very practical.

Bear,
The nicest truck box I have seen was a Pro-Tech. It was a beautiful piece of work, welds were very, very nice! I have seen some other truck boxes that were not nearly as neat (welders in training?). It was spendy, around $550 dollars, but like they saying goes...you get what you pay for!

Where'd you see that box (Pro-Tech)? It would make a good stocking-stuffer, and a pretty big sock it'd be, for me. A lot of guys around here have their truck boxes painted to match their truck too, it looks sharp although it makes an already spendy mod even spendier, and I have 'issues' about how yuppified that would make my truck look. Thanks, bro –

You can't go wrong with a Weather Guard diamond plate tool box. They are a bit on the expensive side,$395 , but the quality and looks of them makes it all worth it!!

Reavis,

Sorry it's taken so long to get back to this. I saw the ProTech at my local Quality Supply store, I don't know is this chain is nationwide. ProTech has manufacturing facilities in Nashville and Vancouver (USA).
