Question CB Installation

I have a 1997 F-150, 5 speed, 4x4 on the floor. I would like to install my cb and scanner, but am unsure where to put it, because of space. Any suggestions or experiences would be VERY helpful. Also I have two 4 foot k-40 whips I would like to install and suggestions on where the best place to put them are.

Thanks for any help

Jeremy

Cool

I did it the easy way. I punched a hole in the floor and ran the cable through there. A lot of people here will dissagre with me on that. I mounted mine under the dash right in the middle. As for the antennas mount one right in the middle of the bed close to the cab and sell the other one. If you can't get the antennas at least 7 feet apart like on a big rig the directional effect you look for with co-phased antenna systems are reversed and you signal is sent farther sideways than it is forward and back. (leared the hard way) on my last truck and ended up with twelve holes in the bed instead of four.

I mounted mine to the right and under the steering column. You may have to adjust depending on how long your legs are. I have an antenna that mounts to the glass with double-sided tape on the inside and outside of the window. It transmits through the glass. I ran my cable behind the dash, behind the kick panel, under that door plastic on the floor, then behind the factory toolbox, and then up to the window. You can't see the cable anywhere and I didn't make any extra holes. I'd get rid of the whips unless you absolutely need them and get one that mounts to the glass or the bed. Don't know what to tell you about the scanner. Hope that helps a little...

Always have to disagree with punching holes in the floor since there are so many holes there already. If you pull up the carpet a little under the gas and brake, You will see a hole with a rubber plug, remove the plug,,run your wires and replace the plug.

I mounted my amateur radio and CB radio on a RAM mount post on the floor. For photos of the install, visit this site:

I permanently mounted the antennas by drilling holes through the cab roof. Both radios perform excellent.

In order to get my CB in I first took out the rubber plug from underneath just in back of the drivers seat. I then poked a small hole just large enough to run the wire in the carpet. I cut an X in the rubber boot and fed the wire through put the rubber boot back in and sealed it with a dab of silicon - For the Whip I attached a piece of aluminum to one of the holes already in the frame - I happened to be able to use the same bolt as my step bars. The piece of aluminum was just long enough to allow the whip to come up between the cab and the bed. One piece of cushion for vibration deadening and I was finished. I currently just have my CB on the right side of the drivers portion of the 60/40 split on the floor. Easy to reach and OK for sound.

Has anyone tried one of those "through the Glass" Ant? They are like Cell ant. I am just wondering how good they are. I don't want to drill any holes in my sheet metal! I will only use the CB when 4X4ing.

Silver Bullet, can you elaborate a little more on how you mounted your whip? You had stated previously that you used a piece of aluminum to mount the whip on. Reason why I'm asking is that I have terrible SWR reading, 3+ on my meter. I've got my whip grouded, grounded the CB unit itself, still can't get the SWR down. How's your SWR?

Crashthings- through the glass antennas suck for deflection and ground plane. Get a whip, at 108" is the best. Drilling a hole in your truck is of no concern, as long as you do it correctly. Depending on your antenna mount, paint any exposed metal from drill holes, then seal with silicone. Truck CB antenna installation should be a permanent addition to your truck, so might as well do a professional job at it. It's a truck, treat it like one, it'll take a drill hole(s) !!! ;-)

Thank You for the responses. Here is what I did:

I got a piece of 14 guage strip of metal, 2" by 24", I bent the metal as necessary. I attached it to the floor board with screws. Then ran the wires to the whips through the hole under the front seat. Everything works great and looks 100% professional. I even impressed myself!!!!!

Thanks again for all your help, Now I can help others!!!!!!!!

It may be a little too late to reply to this but I came up with a pretty good way to mout a whip antenna that actually looks good to. Fist, get a mirror mount for your antenna, the kind of mount that would only work with older style mirrors. Next, pick up one of those plugs you would put on your box rail, i.e.-the little square cut out at each corner of the box. Buy the plug that has a hook on it that you would put a strap through for cargo. Then put the mirror mount on that hook. It worked perfect for me and it looks really good to. Ne need to drill holes. You'll have to run a seperate ground wire to the mount. Sorry I don't have pictures. -ZRracer
