Mod priority?

Just bought an '05 Lariat S-Crew and looking to juice it up a little. Interested to hear suggestions on the order I should make the mods since I can't do them all at once ($$$). So far, my list is:

1) Dual 16" e-fans
2) Air intake
3) Throttle body
4) Exhaust
5) Programmer

Missing any big ones? Would anyone recommend a different order? Much obliged.

The order I would get is
1) Air Intake, adds great horse power for less money
2) Tuner
3)Exhaust
4)Fans
5)Throttle body if I would even do this one

Thats my opinion, but it is really up to you and the amount of money you want to spend at the time

In order of what I'd do: 2,4,5,1 - I wouldn't do 3.

Save yourself a lot of time and money lumpy and skip the first four and go straight to #5. I have the same truck as you...bone stock and just did the x-cal2 from Mike Troyer. Trust me its... Oh and welcome to the funny farm by the way!

Thanks, all, for the info (and the hospitality).

SAJEFFC, could you please clarify what "x-cal2 from Mike Troyer" is? Thanks.

I agree with the others, get a tuner first, then intake, exhaust, and efans. I would get pullies instead of the TB IMHO.

I'm gonna break away from the crowd and say start with A) what you can afford B) what you like best if you are doing your own work.

I personally would start with exhaust. It deons't matter how much you can inahle if you can't exhale it all out. From what I now understand, you don't need headers. If you want to get a little crazy, follow my route. I cut the pipes just behind where they mate to the manifolds. From there, the piping went up to 3 inches rest of the way back. I used jeep 6cyl cats for emmisssions purposes and they sufficed, just had it instpected. I have a set of Flowmaster 40 series muffles and magnaflow tips exiting the passenger side. I had to much air ride **** to try and get around for rear exit. Cost you say? I bribed a buddy down the road with AMS tickets at the next race and my total cost was $120 for 2 cats, $36 in 3" pipe, and $350 for him to bend contort and weld that bad boy together in a truncated timetable of 12 hours, while running the rest of his shop. OK, well he failed the time table part miserably, by a day, but it looks great and sounds awesome.

Then I would add the air intake, use the short ram, brand name is totally irrelevant. I can get you one like I have for about $75 shipped to you.

I was hot on the TB trail until today the guy at dugan told me that those are bad about sticking and a few other things, big reasons not to buy. ANd he wasn't telling me that because he didn't think I'd buy, it was because as he said "yet another" f-150 that was super modified was comin in on a rollback that had all that crap on it.

I have no opinion on the X2, I inquired to Troyers email and never got a response. Have read some good, some bad. I am waiting for a diablosport deltachip myself I ordered from dugan.

I am not sure why you want the fans!?! Sure, it reduces a little drag, but its more helpful for space in supercharger apps

Thanks for the input. Yes, I am going to do the work myself and, must admit, I'm looking forward to it.

Curious as to the short ram intake you mentioned. Haven't seen any that fit the F-150. Do you have an installed pic? Benefits over regular length intake?

Pretty much decided not to mess with the TB. You guys all helped clear that up.

Was looking into fans because a lot of folks felt they would save a little gas and hp vs. stock.

Thanks again.

Hi 98Navi;

Yes, you 'broke away from the crowd', and also broke away from what really works (and doesn't work - like SlowMasters) in these trucks. Whatever.

Sorry to hear about your luck with Troyer - that's not indicative of their customer service. Have you tried again? Try phoning them. You are making a mistake with Diablo - the X2 with Mike's tunes is by far the best single performance mod you can apply for the money.

Also FYI - e-fans and underdrive pulleys free up approx 25 hp at the rear wheels, so it's not a trivial mod. Add superior, redundant cooling( two fans/two controllers) and it's an excellent investment.

Hi lumpyf150;

My best advice is to arm yourself with good reliable info by doing a LOT of Searching on the 'Chips & Programming' forum - there's more good advice about what really is effective & actually R & D'd and tested - and what is BS, in that one forum, than you'll find anywhere else. And the discussions include much more than just tuning. Advice on the best mods, in the correct order, that actually produces real-world results, not just pleasant noises

So read up, on the info and feedback and testimonials, contemplate life a bit, then decide.

Cheers
Cave Painter

The info in these forums has been extremely helpful, just wasn't sure about the order. Pretty much know what I'm going to go with and the order. Now just small details like how to pay for it and getting the wife to agree to it...
