GPS!

Thought I'd start this thread since I keep running into people with GPS questions else where. I have a Garmin Color StreetPilot and love it! Since map based GPSs have come out there is now a truly easy way to know exactly where you are anytime including the road you're on not just coordinates! There are sevral models with built in map databases and a few with additonal plug in ports for highly detailed map chips. The Garmin Street pilot series (with the proper chip) will show vitualy every street address, attraction and even every off-road trail that I've been able to find!

Sounds like a neat toy ! How much did you pay for it ? I've seen some of these rigs around but have not payed much attention as I thought they were mostly for marine use.

I've got the Lowrance Airmap 100. Most of the time I use for flying, but I can use a program call Street Map and download an area into the unit. Pretty cool. One thing you have to remember, most GPS's only guarantee accuracy to only 100 feet or so,if your lucky. I paid around $500 for mine.

Question

Hey Wynjammer,

Where did you get the 9007 head lights? I tried yesterday to get them through PIAA and they indicated they were not available yet!? Even though they have them in their catalog. These are the super white replacement bulbs correct? Sorry to post off topic.......

I bought a Garmin GPS 12 a year ago. It was only $150. It doesn't have all the fancy colors and maps, but I mainly use it in the rocky mountains and have no need for all that extra stuff. Its simple to use, light weight, and does just what I need. I have used it in my vehicles a few times to get MPH readings.

I use GPS all the time, ans I find that accuaracies of around 30 feet are the norm. I use it as primary navigation for IFR flying commercially, and I literally trust it with my life, especially when out in the middle of nowhere, flying an approach with no outside reference to some out back-in-the-bush airstrip. Absolutely wonderful technology. I've seen handheld GPS down in the $200 range, and that's in Canada. Shop around, you can get some awesome deals.

Question

Wynjammer,

How much did the Garmin Color StreetPilot set you back? The lowest i've seen is $700. Also, do you have any installed pics?

Thanks.

I got the Garmin StreetPilot ColorMap last week, and finally got around to mounting it. I modified a 1" cell phone mount bought at Radio Shack. The picture shows it before I notched the cover on the Radio and ran the power cable down to the fuse box.

How has everyone else mounted their GPS'?

Thumbs up

Conq;
Schweet! Looks like my dash, 'cept for the cool Street Pilot Color mounted there! Now for the tough question: Have you found the SPC has a good enough internal database, or do you recommend the add-in map cartridges? I have wanted one since the monochrome one came out, but have shied away based on the extra cost of map cartridges for everywhere I might wanna go. It seems that I'd really need 'em most when I went someplace I did not live, but that includes a lot more places than if I got the one for my area. (sure coulda used one in Memphis last week!). But if the built in database has good enough coverage of major roads, it would do just fine. Thanks for the user feedback in advance!

The default map data is too sparse for my needs, but it does include all major roads.

At the end of the month there will be available the MapSource CD-ROM. ( http://www.tvnav.com/mgms.html ) It will let you download whatever areas you want for more detail. You can buy blank 8 and 16meg cartridges to use.

I have pre-ordered and should receive it soon. They also have the ColorMap for around $545, which is the cheapest I've seen it anywhere.

Yes, it tracks Latitude, Longitude, Speed, Top Speed, Average Speed, Total Driving Time, Total Stopped Time, Total Distance, etc..

With the software you can also do route calculations, transfer them to the ColorMap, and it will give you turn by turn directions.

But, if all you want is Latitude, Longitude, and basic navigation, the StreetPilot ColorMap is overkill. You can get a basic GPS for Less than $100 probably.

I want it all. I wish they had a larger screen to view the maps. I have considered the Delorme unit but then I would need a laptop computer for viewing.

Conqsoft;
Thanks! That sounds like the perfect setup. And my birthday is coming up in september, so maybe I'll leave a streetpilot brochure on the coffee table...
