CB Radio

I know this may sound stupid but what are some reasons to have a cb radio? I want one so I can get the pa speaker and use it but i dont want to spend 100$ to get one and only use it for that. So what are they good for? Does anybody know where i can find a cheap cheap cb radio with the pa attachment?

Most of the guys I know use them when they offroad. They're great for camping (as long as the other's have CBs), long road trips (get to talk to long haulers). I make the drive from Eugene to Portland and back about once every two weeks, and I use mine quite a bit, it's pretty nice to check on traffic, and wheather, and just to listen in on people's conversations.

Not to mention the PA is really fun.

I picked a Cobra 19 DX II up from ebay for less than $25. The 19 DX II (and the newer, better looking, 19 DX III) is PA equipped. It's a nice little radio too.

Good luck.

Let me know if you need help with the install.

I almost got that one... if you are willing to pay the $$, that will work just fine. I think they retail for about $100, so $58 + s/h isn't too shabby.

I got my speaker from a local sports/auto store, so you can pick one up there, or pick one up off ebay, either way. It's pretty simple to hook up.

1) decide on where you are going to mount the unit.
---- Mine is mounted on the center console (under the head unit and cupholder).

2) Mark where you will be drilling your mount holes, then carefully drill pilot holes for the mounting screws.

3) Decide where you are going to mount your mic.
---- If possible I would recomend mounting it to the side of your actual CB unit (to minimize holes in your plastic).

Now that you have everything mounted, it's time to wire it. You have two options here...

a. Wire straight to battery

--or--

b. Wire to a hot fuse on your fuse block in the cab

I chose the latter. The easiest way to wire it to the fuse box is to get what's called a 'fuse tap' which is a small piece of copper that slides in with your fuse and you just put a female quick disconnect on the end of the primary wire to the CB, and plug it right in to the fuse tap. Mine is wired this way, and it works fine for me. Wire it to the power point fuse (check your owner's manual for the position).

If you choose to wire it straight to your battery, you will obviously need to run the wire through your firewall. I don't know if this is the same for the '01s, but on my '97 there is a hole in the firewall on the driver's side about a foot and a half off the floor. Reach up there with a flashlight and see if you can find it. It should be above and to the right of where you steering column goes through.

There will be a small peice of foam insulating the hole, pull that out, and you have your hole. Run the primary wire(s) through this hole, then along the firewall to your battery.

Now that you have ran the hot wire(s) whichever way you chose... you have to ground the black wires. You will probably need to crimp a connecter on the end of the ground wire... but any metal piece will usually be a good ground.

So, now it should be all powered up.

AT THIS POINT TO NOT PLUG THE MIC IN, IF YOU PRESS THE MIC BUTTON WITHOUT AN ANTENNA ATTACHED YOU WILL BLOW THE FUSE

Now it's time to decide where to mount the antenna. This is the subject for an expert probably, becase there is a great deal of importance in terms of performance depending on where you mount your antenna.

So, you might want to read up on that.

Mine is currently mounted in the gap between the hood and the rest of the body on the driver's side. Personally, I have grown tired of the way it looks, and will be converting to an antenna like this one shortly...

I use it pretty close range anyway, so performance isn't as important as looks for me.

It also looks like the one you are getting comes with an antenna anyway, so you might not have to worry about any of this.

So... we coverred mounting.... wiring... antenna... hmm...

oh, right, PA speaker.

Mine is mounted on my firewall right now, but soon I will be moving it down to just below where the stock horn is...

Should be a little louder. Run the PA speaker wire just like you would run the hot wires to the bettery (through the firewall).

I hope this helps!!
