Going ford...

I need a new SUV, and a '99-02 Ford Expedition seems to fit the bill. There are a lot of aftermarket modifications available for the 5.4L V8, and the size seems right for what I am looking for. So, my question to those of you who are experienced with the options that are out there: What modifications will get me the best bang for my buck? And time?

I have been checking out a couple Expeditions, and I know that I am going to want to boost the HP to make it a little more responsive, and hopefully get a little bit better fuel economy. I am looking to keep it conservative, and try to keep it under $2000. What mods and accessories do you guys think should make the list?

Hey Buddy, Welcome to F-150 online

The first thing that I would do, is to invest in a good exhaust system. The 5.4l is a good, strong engine from the factory, but has potential to be very powerful. I first suggest getting a good exhaust system, this could run you from $300-$800, depending if you replace the stock cats with free flow models, run true duals, and your muffler type. ( this will free up 30-50hp,depending on the application). Just search around the forums for the muffler type and exit type that best suits you, there are very intelligent people here who would be happy to help you.

Next, the superchip performance tuner is very popular here. I will easily give your 5.4 26+hp. Even more is added with exhaust or other mods. The tuner allows you to modify the automatic trasmission to wind out longer and shift faster, which adds up to faster acceleration. These are sold by Troyer Performance ( A supporting vendor on F-150 online) and they go for $400.

Then consider purchasing an underdrive belt system, this reduces the parasitic drag of the belts on you engine and will free up 12-14hp, and if used with the tuner 16-17hp. They are also sold by Troyer Performance. I belive they go for $180.

These mods will probably give you the best HP/$ ratio. But search around the forums, and see what you can find. Let me know if I can be anymore help to you.

Best of Luck
Will Vickery

I piddled my money away on my last truck with most of the typical bolt-ons. You get nice results, but they're moderate for the dollar. I would save a bit more and buy a supercharger kit. I contemplated buying one and then just stepped up to a Lightning. The typical mods vs a supercharger are no comparison on a 5.4.

mods

I have installed the Airraid,The tuner from Troyer and duals, And power is unbeliveable just the firm transmission was alot the only problem i have is the Airaid has a small vibration when going into top gear when towing until the rpm's come up.But i have people ride in my truck before and after and they could not belive the diffirence.I did most of my testing from 0-90 because thats how much of straight shot that i had. I used a stop watch 4 test before and 4 test after i went from 18.80 seconds to 17.25 seconds . They maynot seem alot but its a true test. And the seat in the pants feel from 10-50 mph is unbelivable. It will bark the tires on take off and depending on what type of road you on it will get second about 2 out 5 times..I hope this information helps you. Like the good people here have help me

IMHO< a supercharger does not apply in "bang for your buck" situations. More like bucks, and bucks, and bucks, and a few more bucks. You'd think by now the price would have gone down, but each new brand seems to cost more than the last. ,,,,98
