Filter vs. whole intake
Which is better the K&N Generation II FIPK or the K&N 77 Series High-Flow Performance Kit? It might sound stupid, but what is the difference in the two? Is it worth it to get one of these or just get the k&n filter?
Sorry so many questions, your advice will be greatly appreciated!!

hey jeffallred i dont thank ther is much difference in the 77 and flik the 77 is nicer looking havent used just the filter but i know some guys have done mod on ther stock air box (do a search) i do have the filk on my 02 screw 5.4 and i like it hope this helps 72 mustang
The big difference between the the K&N Generation II FIPK (FIPK2) and the K&N 77 Series High-Flow Performance Kit is that the 77 series is prettier but is not yet CARB approved. Therefore in California the 77 series is for "Off Road Use Only".
Honestly, I would think that the FIPK2 would work better because the metal tube of the 77 sereis would (I think) transfer more heat to the incoming air. But this is just a gut feeling.
Also, one of the criticism K&N has had is that the FIPK2 didn't have a heat shield. However, they now have a NEW part number for the F-150 that does have a heat shield. The old K&N FIPK2 part number is 57-2514-4 and the new K&N FIPK2 part number is 57-2541. The problem is that they still sell both, so you have to be careful about which one you get (if you want the heat shield).

Sorry, if I knew someone selling the new FIPK2 for under $200...I would buy it.
AutoZone has the old FIPK2 for $160 (was ~$230) I would like to have the heat shield, however, $160 is a good price and I don't know how much heat that little shield would really shield. (The sell ends 15 September 2004)
K&N has said for years that the F-150 didn't need the heat shield. However, I have never measured the under hood temperatures (at the filter or anywhere else) so I don't know if this is a fact or an excuse.

Kinda makes you wonder...if the F150 does not need a heat shield, then why did they design the updated model WITH a heat shield?
But, for that $70 savings, you could easily design and build your own shield. I think I'm headed to AutoZone tonight after work...

It's a AutoZone.com only sale. I don't think you can get the price in the stores (actually I know this is the case because I went to my local AutoZone today during lunch. No Joy)
As far as, Why add the heat shield? One possibility, "Give the people what they want, even if it doesn't make a difference." Some of K&N's competition offers cold air intake and heat shields so...if it's going to sway your purchasing decision then they may as well added it.

Yeah I called AutoZone the other day and they told me they didn't have a sale on them and didn't know anything about it. They quoted me $320 for the 57-2541. That is rediculous!!!!
If you guys ever hear of where to get one for cheap let me know!
Thanks

I have had the MAC intake on my F150 for a couple of months, very satisfied and purchased for just less than $150. A heat shield will only benefit you at idle to maybe 2-3 mph, test were run that proved this sometime ago.
