Gps

hi,

I was wondering if anyone here has the Delorme Earthmate GPS that connects to the Laptop. I was wondering how accurate it works and if it works in desolate places.

Thanks

I must confess I have one but, have not used it yet. In fact I bought it before I bought the laptop.
Now I have the laptop so I will get busy trying it out. I also want to see the speed compared to the truck spedo.

Don't know about the DeLorme, but I use an Etrex Legend all the time and am delighted with it. Doesn't matter how remote you get, unless it is inside the garage!

I, too, have the Garmin Etrex Legend and have been thrilled with it.

I thought about going with the DeLorme system (the add on GPS reciever for the laptop) but opted not to because it's just too bulky to pack my lappy all the time (and a power inverter).

I think you'll find that the GPS speed will be more accurate than the speedo. There's no real way to tell which is precisely accurate but, my speedo and GPS only typically vary within 1-2 MPH.

When I bought new tires 265 70 16s, I went to a speedo shop and paid $20 for a check of the truck speedometer. They gave me a chart that showed from 15 to 85 mph and actual speed versus the truck speedo readout.
With the larger tires I was within 1 mph of actual speed.

the gps unit I have is a tracking device. it is a mobileguardian. it has a relay on it that you can tie to the starter and it will disable it. you can track it from a website and send commands to shut it down. it is nice, especially if it gets stolen.

I've got both. Earthmate & Garmin eTrex Legend as well. They are both very accurate. The Garmin is a little more accurate & faster to aquire satellites.

You can't go wrong either way.
