NE1 read Steve W's tech article on air filter replacement?

NE1 read Steve W's tech article on air filter replacement?
In the tech articles on this website Steve W. wrote how he took out the stock airbox and just stock the filter in the hose. Something like that. Did NE1 ever try that or hear if it worked out ok for him? It is hard to cough up $250 when a VERY similar product is on ebay for $50.
