does it need to be an aftermarket one, or can it be custom?

You dont have to buy a rollbar made exactly for your style of truck. If you want a really cheap one find someone wanting to unload any rollbar made for a fullsize truck, take it to a fabrication shop, and they can cut and weld it to fit your truck.

Roll Bar

Sterling Equipment makes custom fit roll bars for the F-150. You can get a double main, single kicker, in various styles and with a black powder-coat finish.

Sterling's price is comparable to the universal kits. The advantage of the Sterling roll bar is that it is a welded one-piece roll bar (as opposed to the multiple piece roll bars you get with a universal kit).

Also, the double main, single kicker will have 4 mounting points for lights.

I purchase a Sterling roll bar and would highly recommend it.
