What have I done now?/Air filter question

Never posted on this particular forum before but let's see if I can get some help.

First off the question relates to my 92 TC, not the Wood or the Conti. Same type of engine and the Lincoln boards are not too mod oriented.

So, two weeks ago installed a larger MAF body and K&N totally open cone filter setup. I won't mention the vendor at this point but they are not on this board.

Only one initial problem, there was no provision for mounting the air inlet temperature sensor in the filter body so after a few phone calls, we drilled a hole in the boot and stuck the sensor in.
From the get go, no start on first key turn then it would start but buck/backfire etc until temp gauge was halfway up. After that did run OK but not great. I did disconnect the battery.

Car was running so-so and decided to take it on a 2200 mile trip to Nebraska as it it is such a killer road car. 100 miles from end of first leg car started missing badly and was way down on power and gas mileage went from normal 23-25 to about 17. Checj engine light which had been coming on sporadically came on and stayed on. Limped it into Lincoln NE and had dealer check it out.
Replaced both 02 sensors and the air temp sensor. $580, ouch.

Car would start on second try and smoothed out a little quicker but still was not sharp. They said needed new MAF sensor (low voltage reading) but were out of stock and could not fix before I had to leave. Drove home and after about 600 miles the car started same crap again only worse. Only thing I could find was air temp sensor was a little loose and I jammed it in and it ran better but Check engine light came on every time I hit the throttle.

Got home called vendor and was told to look for any evidence of air leaks downstream from MAF unit. Just by luck, I had put the original MAF housing in the trunk. No obvious leaks were found and then I thought of fitting the sensor in the old housing to see if any difference. Viola!! The old housing had two grooves cast into the opening for the sensor the aftermarket one did not. Why?? Well, there are four plastic tabs on the bottom of the original factory sensor (1/16 of an inch more or less) The tabs fit into the grooves. New body had no grooves so the tabs were not allowing sensor to seat against the o-ring seal. Took a dremel and removed the tabs and it fit. BTW, with the body off the car you could see that there was a gap of maybe 1/32 between the sensor and the body. Good for a lot of leak!!.

Car now starts on first turn but still spits back for 30 seconds or so and check engine light flickers on cruise throttle for a second or two but the car runs out real smart. Still ain't right so I checked on CrownVic.net for additional info as they run the same motor. Got tons of threads stating the MAF must be recalibrated for a high flow filter and/or I need a chip programmed for the filter.

Have not read this info on f150online ever, in fact have read many/many times that no further action is required when changing just the filter.

Hoping to find out here some qualified opinions/info and also if I may have lunched the 02 sensors again or worse.

Sorry for the long post, but I would like to get the TC into the 14s as a sleeper. It was a lot easier with my 99 Lightning and my present Blackwood although I did chip both of those plus a few others.
