anyone in NY know how this works?

I think everyone would agree that one thing the new f150 excells at is cruising at 80+ on the highway. Unfortunately thats starting to create a stack of tickets in my glove box. My last was this sunday in NY on I-90. The ticket doesn't have an amount to pay it just says check guilty or not guilty and they will decide what to do to you Anybody know how that typically works, and does anyone have any suggestions. Thanks

If you have a good driving record, I would recommend checking "not guilty" and then plea bargaining the charge down to reduce the points and cost. If you have lots of prior convictions, the DA may not plea it down. At that point either you continue "not guilty" and go to trial, or plead guilty and pay whatever fine the court tells you.

Another option is to plead "not guilty", attend a defensive drivers course, and then talk with the DA and the judge. That will often get your sentence reduced.

If you just check "guilty" and send it in, you will receive a notice indicated that you now have a conviction on your record and a bill for the fine amount.

Also, if you have 3 speeding ticket convictions within an 18 month period you will probably have your license suspended.

Whatever you do, don't ignore the tickets. That will get you in deep doo doo very quickly.

I base this information on my wife's recent experience with speeding tickets in NY.

Edit: Sorry, I just noticed you live in Mass., so I'm assuming you have a MA license, in which case the license suspension part won't apply. The rest is applicable. Your decision should be based on your prior record (what impact will one more conviction have on your record?), the convenience of returning to NY to plea your case, and how much money you can afford to pay our corrupt government.

Thanks BJB I'm not from NY and didn't know if there were any loopholes or anything. Here in Mass the citation amount is listed right on the ticket. Didn't know if NY varies the amount depending on what you plee, or if its a thursday, or got the good parking spot. Thanks for the info.

If it was over 20 mph over the limit its an apperance ticket anyway. If you plead not guilty you have to appear so take your chances and plead not guilty. They probably will let you get away with a lesser charge. In Suffolk where I live there is no plea barganing.

BJB's advice is right on....one thing though, I doo think you can get in deep doodoo because if I'm not mistaken NY and Mass reciprocate(sp?) within their DMV's, so an unanswered ticket in NY can come bite you in the mASS eventually.

05screw it was 82 in a 65 so hopefully I won't have to apear. I don't have the time to get out to NY easily so I guess I'll have to plead guilty and pay. Any guess as to what the fine might cost. My record is anything but stellar. Thanks for the info

I got a 76 in a 20 in my mustang. And it stated 20 mph or over the speed limit you had to appear in court. I had to get a lawyer. And the fine was $350 plus $25 surcharge. My fine was because of exsecive speed. I have friends in NYC that are cops and they issue speeding tickets all the time with radar and they say the judge throughs a lot of them out or reduces them to non moving violations. My guess to your ticket would be in the $200 range.

Its funny, because NYS reciprocates with Quebec and Ontario Canada as well, along with a few other US states. You can get a ticket in another country and they will track you down. Good luck!

Lawyer it

The last few tickets I found that I just give my Lawyer the $125.00 and I doin't have to worry about it. The last one turned out to be parking to far from curb on I90.

I have one also, but the cops on the island use instant on now. Sucks. An insurence company (they wouldnt say which one) bought every precinct 10 radar guns in Suffolk County.

I've got an escort but he was hiding in a good spot with instant on laser and I was all alone like a sitting duck.

The name of them is called "STALKER", do a search and check out the capabilities. I used to own radar detectors myself, Escorts mostly...

Now I just speed and say F-IT, come and get me coppers

I can also safely say that if I set my cruise on 74, I can ride the Thruway all day, passing cops doing radar and I never even tap my brakes. Never have been bothered and I drive 1,000's of miles a month throughout the state.
