OEM Nav HU upgraded to Audiophile?

I recently purchased an '08 King Ranch which has the Factory Nav system, but not audiophile (no subwoofer). I like the factory NAV HU and plan on keeping it, but I want to upgrade the speakers and add a sub. It seems to me that the easiest way to do that would be to buy a factory audiophile sub and change to aftermarket front speakers. Is the NAV HU the same as a "audiophile" HU? I've seen other posts where it says that just by adding a factory sub that it won't work unless the HU is re-programmed. Is this true? and what does re-programming entail? Is it it just a code that is re-programmed into the HU? I appreciate your comments.

I did a similar upgrade to my 2006 Lariat, however I did not have the Nav, just the CD-6. I had to upgrade the HU to an audiophile HU, then picked up a sub on ebay. Everything was plug and play, the Lariat had all the wires under the back seat and behind the radio ready to go. I looked at buying a NAV HU before I broke down and just got a Garmin, I am 95% positive all NAV HUs have the audiophile capability built in. Pull the radio out of your truck, and see if it has a empty recepticle. While you have it out, see if you can find the wiring for the sub.

In fact I have a second sub, because I was bidding on 2 at the same time and one them both if your interested let me know, I can take pictures of it (has a minor crack on the mounting plate).

you can also try one of these subs too. I have seen pictures, and know there is a thread about them around here somewhere. I do not personally have one, but I hear they work very well with any radio including stock since it just plugs in with the harness. I think it looks really good too.

Reprogramming req'd for Nav HU Sub

You will need to have the HU reprogrammed. It is correct that they are all subwoofer compatible, but the software has to be reprogrammed to output to the correct pinouts to feed the sub. There is an offer on e-bay to do the programming for $69 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/PROGR...fAudioQ5fVideo). I had this done when I added a Mercury HU to my '07 KR, it had to be set up for the audiophile with sub, change the screen shot to Ford instead of Mercury, and activated the rear entertainment system (for future add on possibilities). There are other guys out there that do this, depending on where you are, may want to look around.

Thank you guys for your comments -- I certainly appreciate it. This is the original HU that came in my KR (NAV w/6disc changer) and I'm hoping it doesn't have to be reprogrammed. I pulled out the HU yesterday to check to see if the sub was already hooked up -- apparently it is, because all of the holes are filled (3 connectors were hooked up to the back of the HU).

The truck came with the rear entertainment/DVD system, so I'm hoping all that is needed is to plug in the Subwoofer that I purchased off of ebay. Could it be that the '08 KRs are audiophile ready and that the only reason it isn't considered an audiophile system is that the audiophile speakers aren't installed? Thanks again for your comments.
