Can the OEM reverse camera work with an aftermarket head unit?

Would anyone know if the oem reverse camera can work with an aftermarket head unit? I am getting a Kenwood 8120 and I like the placement of the tailgate camera on the 08.

Sure can, just got to be a little smarter than the average bear. Search for the backup cam mod. I figured out how to do it.

The parts are from Ford but they are expensive. Up here the handle lists for 180 and the camera for around 500. They have LOTS of room to move on price though.

I wanted to give you guys a heads up. There is more than 1 OEM camera out there. The first one was wired like so:

I didnt find much info and decided to wait and let the experts get some experience with the system before I messed with it. In perfect timing, Low_e_red posted some info he found on this system, so credit for this mod goes to him

Here is the rundown of how the system is wired. The cam is always powered on with 12v switched. The monitor in the mirror is powered on when a 12v reverse signal is sent to the mirror. A possible mod here would be to install a switch to send 12v to the mirror and view the reverse signal on whenever you want. Here is the wiring pinout for the cam, found in the tailgate harness:

12v switched - Pin 1 (white/lt. blue)
Ground - Pin 6 (white)
Video + / RCA center pin - pin 4(red/yellow)
Video - / RCA outside pin - pin 5(black/yellow)
The second one(and the one I got) is wired like so:

The number order is reversed The # 3 on the diagram is actually #1 on the plug and #1 is actually #3 on the plug. The #4 on the diagram is actually the #6 and #6 is #4 on the plug. The #2 and # 5 wires remain the same. So the it's basic wiring, Red is power, black is ground. #5 White wire with silver colored wire core is (video -) and the other white wire with the copper color core is Video + which on the plug would be marked as #4. Hooah!!!:
Hopefully this will save pages of searching. I just installed it and a 8120 Kenwood and am very happy with the results.

Image looks great, i like the fisheye so that you can see the corners of the bumper. I just hate those bright colored guide lines....

I didn't like them at first either but they are kind of handy in tight spots.

I think the guide lines are great. They come in very handy for reversing into a tight spot and for lining up to connect the trailer. Perfect the first time everytime
