Backup Camera and Car Wash

Hi guys,

OK, so I'm pretty close to buying a Kenwood DNX7100...and I'm a bit undecided about back-up camera's at the moment.

See, I live in New England, and washing the car outside during the salty nasty cold winter is a necessity, but impossible to do by hand. So I take the truck through those 'touchless high-pressure' car washes quite frequently during the winter (1-2 per week...I hate salt).

The obvious question...am I just inviting trouble with my back-up camera here (water in lens/fogging etc)? There is no way this type of car washing is going to stop (at least not during winter)...so this question is the go/no-go for the back-up camera.

I'm looking at the Boyo VTL400.

Thanks!

JP

JP,

I too am going to install a Boyo this weekend. I have been told (for what it's worth), that they do pretty well. I would assume as long as you don't have a direct spray hit the camera, you should be fine.

Prost!

I think a direct spray hit is probably unavoidable. These types of car washes use a vertical bar with 5-6 high pressure spray points on it, and it goes all around the car automatically (sort of hard to explain unless you seen them). I'm sure one would be pointing at the camera (granted, from a couple feet away, but still...it's pretty intense pressure.

Any suggestions? Good quality/price?

Thanks!

JP

Why not just but some of the cheap plexiglass at Lowes and make a shield for the camera. That way you can still see and if the plexiglass gets messed up just cut out another piece and replace it

I have the back up cam that came with the DNX 7100. I ran it through a car wash the other day(same high pressure your talking about) and sure enough the picture had a little static after but no fog. Next time I think I will wrap it up with plastic wrap first.

Which one came with it? Where did you buy your 7100?

I have that same camera and have had no problems what so ever with water. You should be good to go!

Thanks for the responses guys. So, I went to crutchfield and looked at the camera again, and it does say 'waterproof'. Sounds like it's been working for people (with the exception of a little static for rerogfx4).

Guess it's as good as any out there to try. Only one way to find out!
