'04 - '06 trim won't come off - please help

I know this has to be easier than it appears to be for me, but I cannot get the 'wood' trim off of my '04 Lariet. Does anyone have a tip or trick to get it off? It was my understanding that I should open my ashtray and start from the bottom and work my way up. It will not budge, and I do not want to break it.

Thanks in advance,
mikebaby

What did you use to pry the top back?

I always start at the bottom. The first time I did it, I thought for sure something was going to break. But, it did not. Just took quite a bit of force pulling to get it loose. Mine has now been off probably 50 times and it still requires a pretty good pull to pop out.

The very first time these can be hard to pull off. The first time I pulled mine I used a very flat metal key to gently start the trim panel at the top. It was about an inch wide and about a 16th of an inch thick. I carefully worked the key, prying till it was slighty loose at the top, then pulling with my fingers. However, every other time I just popped open the ashtray and reached behind the panel and just pop it loose.

The eight white clips are very strong, and very sharp. They can cut you, or scratch up anything they get near. The first time I pulled the panel some stuck in the dash. Be sure you have all eight of them out and on the panel before you put it back in.

I always start at the bottom as well. I use a 90deg pick and put it up behind the panel at each corner and pull straight back at you. Once the bottom is freed up I work my way up the sides. At least one clip will prob stay in and they are easier to get out after you pull the radio.

I still could not get the trim piece off. What I found worked best was to drive to my local Best Buy store car install dept, and the guy happily (or seemingly so ) took a break from what he was doing and grabed a tool to pry it off for me, and asked if there was anything else I needed help with.

That is just another reason why I like Best Buy and hate Circuit City. Now if only all car dealerships had this same type of service...
