Double DIN DVD Install Question

I was looking at installing the Jensen VM9020TS in my 2000 Expy EB. I saw on another forum that some cutting inside the dash was necessary to get this to fit. What I read was that a metal bar needed to be cut out or something like that. I pulled out my current Sony single DIN HU and did see what appears to be just like a plastic housing of some sort (which seemed to be a little flexible) that does angle slightly but no metal bar or plate. I am thinking that maybe just putting a slit in the top of the plastic housing should give me the clearance that is needed (since that part would push up when the unit slides in). I have never installed Double DIN units before so any help would be greatly appreciated. Also how would I go about mounting it, is there a double din mounting kit for this? I did search and saw that someone actually has the same unit in his 98 Nav but his email option is off.

Isnt your vehicle din and a half??

If it is, cutting is going to have to be done, and I think you will still have to find some sort of bracket also to house/ secure it into.

that's the whole thing. The face appears to be double din then tapers down about halfway back. I saw a pic of installed in a 98 navigator which should be the same as mine. I did pull my current HU out and did not really see anything that needed to be cut so I wanted to see if I could get some help. 98navi has the same unit but his email option is turned off so I cant get at him directly.

I just installed 2 single din (double din) into my 1997 F150. The opening is actually I think 1 3/4 din and like you said it tapers in the back. In the 97 it tapered in the back to clear the bracket that was in behind. I had to cut the bracket out plus cut about 1/4 around the opening to make it fit. it was a bit of a pain but with a dremel it can be done. as far as a mounting frame goes i kind of created my own. its not the best but it looks good enough for me. i didnt quite cut enough around the opening so a pre-made mounting frame would not fit on mine. Hope this helps at all.

OK, so if I understand correctly I have to cut out the top part that tapers down then there is a bracket above that which I should cut out as well?

Sorry about that when I re-read what i wrote I wasnt real clear. The stock radio that I took out tapered in the back. When I took out the radio there was a bracket bolted to the back that I had to take out. Now that I remember there also was like a plastic housing that you mentioned earlier. I just cut the top part of the plastic so the HU can fit. Also the opening wasnt a double-din opening it was more like 1 3/4 so I also had to cut that. double din is 4 inches high. My F150 opening was more like 3.5" not sure if yours is the same. Hope this helps.

almost sounds like you dont have the bracket to worry about.

It is starting to make sense now. When I pulled out the radio I do see like a round piece of metal which looks as it would stop the radio from going in too far. Is this the piece that needs to be removed? Thanks for the help I appreciate it.

That is a doubledin opening. Metra makes a doubledin kit for this (99-5802?). You do need to cut the top and bottom edges that the factory radio fits into. Simply trim them flat leave the edges on the sides. You will know what to cut when you hold the kit up in the openning. I'll have to check on the part number tommorro I use them all the time. And you may have to remove the metal support but they usually are screwed in with 9/32 screws.

I do remember seeing some screws so I guess I can take the bracket out instead of cutting it out. As far as the kit I cannot find a double din kit for the 2000 Expedition body. I believe the 99-5802 is a single din kit at least acording to Metra's website.

ok I actually looked at that late last night and thought that it may fit even though the Expedition is not one of the vehicles listed. It looks as if I just need to trim it up a little. I appreciate the help that all of you gave.
