Do either the tom-tom or Garmin require a subscription?

I looked real hard at the TomToms, but -when it came down to pure features/price- I went with a Magellan Roadmate 300.

If you've rented a Hertz, the Magellan is the software package that powers the Hertz NeverLost. Having been in several rentals across the country this year, the NeverLost was always really easy to use and just simply worked.

I got a refurb unit on eBay for about $300.

Tom Tom Gotta GO GO

I bought a 700. Just got it today. Nice electronics but the map data sucks. My street is not there(been here for 14 years), main 4 lane roads missing (been open for a couple of years), and the tracking is off on what is in the map data. I called TT and they have an update coming out in...April. No help for me. They should have stuck with europe. Hopefully they will take the thing back so I can get something that works! Just my .02

Get the Alpine NAV

I got the Alpine NAV 851 and the data can be updated and downloaded
the only bad thing about it, its hella pricey if you just buy the alpine DVD
I like the bigger screen the alpine uses versus that little screen
and the alpine NAV system also talks and tell me when I am close

I have TomTom on my HP PPC2003, and not too pleased with the mapping either. I replaced with HP bluetooth GPS, and use its included software.. VERY pleased.
