AVIC-N1 installation...
Anyone here install the AVIC N1 themselves? Local stereo shop (Ultimate Audio) has one left, but want $2300 installed for it. Seems a little high--especially on last years model--although I understand that many people favor the N1 over the N2. Anyway--does $2300 seem out of line for unit and installation. I know I have seen them 1/2 that price (or more) on Ebay, but I also know ebay can be risky at times. Any opinions are welcome...thanks....
I haven't done the install, but $2300 is very high for that unit. I bet they are holding out at that price for someone who really wants it.
Go with a powerseller on ebay with at least 98% satisfaction rating. I've done a lot of deals on ebay and have yet to get screwed over. That said, it does happen.
The odds are you won't be disappointed. Some shops will install equipment they didn't sell, so call around.

Paul--no doubt you are correct about holding out. The guy told me that he has not ordered any N2's---and doesn't plan too. He made the N1 sound like it should be within the ranks of the spotted owls---if I didn't know any better, I would have thought that unit was the last one on the planet
Anyway--I think I will end up checking ebay--and maybe even undertaking the install myself--will wait for more opinions on the install part though...

I just installed one 2 days ago, very easy to do. I got it off E Bay for about $1100 shipped http://stores.ebay.com/StereoCity1
You have to connect to the VVS wire from your computer, wiring harness behind battery on firewall, its the wire in location 68 on my truck (02 harley F150) or 58. it's a grey wire with black stripe. You need to connect to the back up bulb wire too. I followed the harness from the taillights to the engine compartment, right under the air box is a double harness, the wire is black with a thick pinkish stripe. I located the brain in my front console and the gps antenna on the dash. I ran it up through the defoger vent and stuck the mettal pad right in the middle of the dash, the reception is fine. On the N1 in order to watch DVD's while moving, just hook the green parking brake wire to the ground and it's bypassed. The N2 has a few other tricks to overcome. From what I hear the N1 and N2 are exactly the same aside from the extra blocks for the DVD and price.
If you decide to do it and need any help feel free to give me a shout

I installed my AVIC-N2 last week and it wasn’t any more difficult than any other deck I've installed in the past.
I didn’t connect the speed pulse wire (VVS) though. It was too much of a hassle, and the navigation functions just fine without it.
One of the more concerning differences between the N1 and the N2 is the N2's inability to play video media while the car is in motion. The navigation unit features an internal accelerometer that measures when the vehicle is in motion.
I got around this by running the Video Out into the Back-up Camera Video In. I then wire the Back-up light lead to a switch. So, all I do is flip a switch and the video comes up on the screen.
I have found, however, that it is rather unsafe to drive and watch at the same time. For this reason, I don’t ever watch it when I drive. It’s really for my passengers.
