Reverse sensing system or just a camera?
Reverse sensing system or just a camera?
I'm trying to decide on if I want a reverse sensing system or just a backup camera.
I'm not sure if the camera would capture enough of the sides or not.
The reverse sensing thing I was looking at is the PYLE PLPSMR9:

But I'm not sure that 3.5" screen is large enough to see what's back there to be useful.
Plus I'd like to be able to have the camera view on at any time, with that system you'd have to only have it available when backing since it's in the middle of the mirror. The camera it comes with also doesn't have night vision...
Anyone with a backup camera have any comments?

Take this for what its worth since I have only had the camera for about a week now, and have no experience with the backup sensors...
Although the camera utilizes a wide angle lense, you still need to watch your side mirrors while backing up. I have the camera mounted in my license, which may limit the side views somewhat since it is in the indentation in the bumper for the license, but I think it would be foolish not to watch your side mirrors as well. The advantage to mounting in the license is that it is directly above the hitch which makes lining up a trailer a piece of cake.
I don't know about the camera your looking at but mine works fine at night. I think the backup lights provide enough illumination for the camera to work.
Hope this helps...

I added a camera mounter under my hitch. It doesn't interfere with hitch operations. It has LEDs around the lens which I feel are not necessary and even counter-productive. The camera location does not account for the corners of the back bumper and so the side mirrors are occasionally necessary.
Having said all that, I've gotten to the point where I can judge where I am within inches regardless of the angle I am driving. For $375, it's a great addition and I depend on it daily.

I will be adding a camera to my Eclipse system simply because it is an inexpensive add on. I have had the reverse sensors since I have owned the truck and they are excellent. No guessing whatsoever, the audible beeps are all that you need , especially since the beeping gets more rapid the closer you are to something. Having both would be perfect, but if I had to choose I would take the sensors.
Actuallly I'm going to try something different. Last night I purchased an electric tailgate lock that will lock the tailgate when I lock the doors. I had one of these on my Tundra and they work great.
I then purchased on ebay a 'keyhole' camera that I am going to try to put in the tailgate key location. They showed a picture of one of these cameras installed on a BMW and it looked great. Here is the link to one just like it:

I hope this will work.

If you want your camera on all the time, you can get a system that has a seperate 3.5" monitor that mounts on the windshield. It is usually mounted nex to the rear view mirror. As for night vision, all camera provide some kind of vision in the dark. The better the quality of the camera, the better the "night vision" The backup lights of the vehcile is what really allows you to see. Cameras with LED's don't provide that much more.
Vizualogic and Hitchcam are the best quality out there right now for rear view camera systems. (IMPO)

Yeah, but the LED's don't matter, as the backup lights do a great job.
I have both backup alarm and camera, and using a 90% camera gives me a great view. On the 04 there is a place where you can mount it rather easily.
Still not perfect, a kid or somthing can be right next to your bumper, so nothing beats common sense.

I ended up puting a 7" monitor in the visor and a camera in the bumper. I also got a reverse sensing system.
I use the camera a lot in parking garages when backing up.
I put the camera on a switch so I can turn that off if I don't want it getting power.
It was somewhat a bear to alter the visor so the monitor would fit in to replace the mirror.
